so I finally picked up a Sony ZV-1 because everyone said it was good for beginners but the audio is honestly kind of rough when I film outside. like, if there is any wind at all my voice just gets totally buried and it sounds like a hurricane is hitting the camera. sorry if this is a super dumb question but do I just buy any microphone and plug it in? I saw some that are these tiny little boxes that sit on top and others that look like fuzzy dead cats and Im just really confused.
I want to start posting some travel vlogs for my family back in Ohio by next month so I need something that isnt too complicated to set up. my budget is probably around 100 bucks or so because I already spent way too much on the camera itself. I dont really understand the difference between all the brands either like rode or sennheiser or whatever. is there something pretty much foolproof that I can just snap on and hit record without needing to fiddle with settings for an hour? if anyone has a recommendation for something that actually works well without me having to learn a whole bunch of sound engineering stuff that would be awesome...
> the built-in mic on that camera just cant handle wind. Totally agree. I used to use the Deity V-Mic D4 Mini Cardioid Microphone and was super happy with it for travel. It is cheaper than the Rode and handles wind noise way better than the stock mic. If you want something even easier, check out the Movo VXR10 Pro Universal Video Microphone. It works well right out of the box with zero fiddling needed. Honestly, either one is a massive upgrade for vlogging.
I totally get being worried about messing up your audio. Wind is honestly the worst for travel vlogs. Since you want something super simple that just works, I would look at the <a href=" https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt= Sennheiser+MKE+200+Directional+On-Camera+Microphone&BI=8941&KBID=10361&SID=12345&DFF=d50" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 200 Directional On-Camera Microphone. It has a built-in windshield and a shock mount which is great because you dont have to worry about extra parts falling off while you walk around. It is a bit closer to your budget limit but it feels really sturdy compared to the plastic ones. Just plug it into the side port and youre pretty much good to go. You honestly wont need to touch settings since it handles most of the work for you. It saved me a lot of stress when I was starting out because I didnt want to learn sound stuff either. Good luck with the vlogs!
Honestly, the built-in mic on that camera just cant handle wind. Ive used plenty of setups over the years, and for a simple plug-and-play solution, grab the Rode VideoMicro Compact On-Camera Microphone. It comes with a furry windshield that totally kills wind noise.
