Im heading on a two-week trip to Japan next month and plan to vlog mostly with my trusty Sony RX100 VII. The built-in mic is alright for quiet places, but it totally struggles outdoors when there is any wind or street noise. Ive been looking around online and people keep recommending the Rode VideoMicro II, but others swear by the Sony ECM-W2BT wireless setup. Im kinda torn because the Rode is cheap and small, but wires and cables get super annoying when traveling light. Budget is around 150 bucks max. Anyone using an external mic specifically with the rx100 series that actually fits well in a pocket?

Totally agree with the budget issues mentioned earlier. Tokyo streets are way too loud for cheap setups. If you want something super tiny that wont break the bank, grab a Comica CVM-VM10 II Shotgun Microphone instead. Works great for travel.

Jumping in here because audio on these little cameras can be such a pain. I took the Sony RX100 VII to Tokyo last year and learned the hard way about street noise. That wind in the narrow alleys will totally ruin your footage.

  • Watch out for weight distribution because a heavy mic makes the tiny body awkward to hold
  • Make sure you get the right TRS to TRRS cable or nothing will record
  • I would suggest looking at the DeDe Videomic GO II since it gives you USB-C direct connection without messy adapters Be careful with battery drain too if you go powered. Honestly packing light in Japan is everything, so keeping the setup minimal is key.

Ive been shooting with the rx100 series for years and audio is always the main hurdle. Wireless is great for freedom, but honestly Sony ECM-W2BT Wireless Microphone is gonna push past your 150 budget once you factor in tax. Plus it clutters up the tiny body.
