I’ve been loving my Sony a6400, but I’m looking to step up my street photography game. The kit lens is fine, but I really want something more discreet and sharper to help me blend in. I’ve been eyeing the Sony 20mm f/2.8 pancake for its size, but I’m also curious if the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 is too bulky for a 'compact' setup. I need something with snappy autofocus and a decent aperture for those moody, low-light evening shots. Since the a6400 doesn't have IBIS, I'm a bit torn on which focal length is most versatile for quick snapshots. What’s your favorite compact prime that keeps your rig low-profile without sacrificing image quality?

Had a moment to think about this more and I'm curious about one thing: what's ur typical shooting distance? Do you prefer getting right in people's faces or staying back a bit? Tbh, street photography is all about balance. Basically, prime lenses give you that sharpness ur looking for, but since the a6400 has no IBIS, you have to be reallyyy careful. Without stabilization, even tiny hand movements might ruin ur shot in low light, so you gotta keep those shutter speeds high. If ur looking for budget-friendly picks, consider these:
* TTArtisan 27mm f/2.8 AF - Around $150. It's a tiny pancake, but make sure to check ur copy for quality issues.
* Sony E 20mm f/2.8 - Usually $300 new, but grab it used for like $180. It literally disappears on the body.
* Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary - Around $290. Kinda bulky, but f/1.4 is highkey safer for evening vibes. Anyway, let me know ur vibe! 👍

Regarding what #2 said about exactly what I was thinking - yeah, the lack of IBIS on the a6400 is a total headache when youre trying to stay on a budget. I spent way too much on the Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS a while back and honestly, I was pretty disappointed. It just wasnt as sharp as people claimed for that price point... felt like a waste of money in the end. If you want to save a ton of cash, I actually messed around with the TTArtisan 27mm f/2.8 AF recently. Its surprisingly decent for how cheap it is. I had some issues with the corner softness, but for street shots where you want that raw look, it works. Its way more discreet than the Sigma primes too. I also tried the Samyang AF 24mm f/2.8 FE because I wanted something tiny, but unfortunately the autofocus was kind of a letdown in dark alleys. If you're really watching your wallet tho, maybe look for an old Sigma 19mm f/2.8 DN Art on the used market. Its an older model but costs almost nothing these days. Just gotta keep your hands steady since the a6400 wont help you out there.
