I finally pulled the trigger on a used a6400 and im so hyped to get out there and actually start shooting street stuff! Im living in Chicago so theres plenty of cool alleyways and busy corners but honestly my kit lens is just... not it. Its too slow for those evening vibes and the bokeh is basically non-existent. Im looking at three main options right now but my budget is stuck at like $400 max since I spent most of my savings on the body itself and I need to buy it before my trip to NYC next month.

First is the Sigma 30mm f1.4 because everyone says its the king of apsc lenses and that f1.4 would be killer for night shots but then I keep seeing people rave about the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 zoom. I like the idea of having the flexibility to zoom especially for travel but is f2.8 enough for street stuff at night? Then there's the super cheap route like the TTArtisan 35mm f1.4 manual lens which is barely $100... id save so much money for my trip but I dont know if I can handle manual focus yet while people are moving around.

My main needs are:

  • stays under $400 (used is fine)
  • good for low light street scenes
  • not too bulky because I want to keep it low profile
  • fast enough to catch people walking

Im leaning towards the 30mm prime because of the speed but that 18-50 zoom seems so useful for a one-lens setup... what do you guys think for someone just starting out?

Honestly man, i had the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary for a bit and unfortunately it just didnt cut it for night street stuff in the city. The zoom is nice and all, but f2.8 in those dark Chicago alleys? Total letdown. You're gonna be cranking your ISO way too high and the noise gets pretty gross. I was really disappointed with how much I struggled to get sharp shots once the sun went down... it really wasnt as good as the hype made it seem for low light. The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary is way better for light, but tbh it feels a bit chunky on the a6400 body. I found the autofocus can be a bit hunt-y in low light which is such a bummer when you're trying to catch someone walking fast. If you can find a deal, look for the Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS. It usually hits under $400 used if you look around. It has built-in stabilization which the Sigmas lack, and since the a6400 doesnt have any sensor stabilization, that OSS is a lifesaver for those moody handheld shots. Whatever you do, stay away from that TTArtisan 35mm f/1.4 APS-C for street stuff. I tried going the manual route to save cash and it was honestly a disaster. I missed basically every shot because people just dont stand still and the focus ring is kinda stiff. Save your money and get something with AF so you dont ruin your NYC trip with a bunch of blurry junk.

How dark are we talking? f2.8 is unfortunately gonna struggle with signal-to-noise ratios at night tho...
