What is the absolute best budget-friendly portrait lens I can get for my Sony ZV-E10 that actually gives me that crazy blurry background? I finally pulled the trigger on the camera body last week and I am so hyped to start shooting but the kit lens is honestly just not doing it for me when it comes to the portraits I wanna take. I'm gonna be the unofficial photographer for my sisters outdoor wedding in like two months so I really need to get this sorted soon so I can practice.
I've spent basically my whole weekend on youtube and reddit looking at reviews and I'm honestly more confused than when I started lol. Everyone says the Sigma 56mm f1.4 is the king of crop sensor lenses but its a bit pricey for me right now since I just spent a lot on the camera and some extra batteries. Then I saw the Sony 50mm f1.8 (the OSS one) which is way cheaper but then I read some comments saying the autofocus is kinda slow and clunky for the ZV-E10 since its an older lens design? I really dont want to miss shots of her walking down the aisle because the lens was hunting for focus u know.
My budget is strictly around $300 maybe $350 if I eat ramen for a week lol. I live in a pretty rural area so there arent any shops where I can go and actually try these out before buying. Is the Sigma really that much better than the Sony or even the Viltrox 56mm? I saw the Viltrox too but I heard the colors can be a bit weird sometimes or they have weird ghosting issues. I just want something that makes the person pop and looks professional without me having to sell a kidney. Also since the ZV-E10 doesnt have internal stabilization does the OSS on the Sony lens actually help that much for portraits or is it mostly just for video... I'm mostly doing stills for the wedding but I might snap a few clips too so I'm torn.
> I saw the Sony 50mm f1.8 (the OSS one) which is way cheaper but then I read some comments saying the autofocus is kinda slow and clunky for the ZV-E10 since its an older lens design? Honestly, if youre shooting a wedding, you really gotta be careful with older glass. That Sony E 50mm f1.8 OSS is alright for the price, but you are totally right to worry about the autofocus. For a walking-down-the-aisle shot, that lens might hunt just long enough for you to miss the peak moment. The ZV-E10 has amazing tracking, but a slow motor in the lens will definitely bottleneck the whole system and lead to frustration. I would suggest trying to find a used Sigma 56mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary if you can. It is way sharper and the focus is significantly more reliable for high-pressure events like a ceremony. I've seen them go for $330 or so on the used market if you look around. Regarding the Viltrox... maybe stay away for something as important as a wedding. Their quality control can be hit or miss sometimes, and you really dont want a lens failure or weird ghosting ruining your sisters big day. About the OSS... since your camera doesnt have IBIS, the stabilization in the Sony lens helps with micro-jitters in stills, especially in low light. But if you keep your shutter speed high—like 1/200 or faster—you wont really miss it. Reliability and sharpness are way more important for portraits than stabilization. Just make sure to practice with whatever you get before the ceremony starts... weddings move way faster than you think.

Also, if you want that amazing blurry background without breaking the bank, you really need to check out the Viltrox 56mm f1.4 AF Sony E-mount! I know you heard some stuff about colors but honestly, with a quick edit or a basic preset, they look fantastic. Its such an absolute beast for the price and way faster at focusing than that old Sony lens. You wont miss those aisle shots! Another wild card if you really wanna save some cash is the TTArtisan 56mm f1.8 AF Sony E. Its super budget-friendly and surprisingly sharp for how cheap it is. Quick tip: for the wedding, make sure you turn on Face/Eye Priority in AF in your settings. It makes shooting portraits a total breeze and youll get those crisp eyes every single time. Youre gonna kill it!
late to the party but i wanted to chime in since weddings are high pressure. you might want to consider looking at the used market to get better glass for your money.
