I have three kids and I'm already losing track of what I bought for who. I've got like 400 bucks of stuff hidden in the garage but I forgot which pile belongs to which kid and my oldest almost found my paper list.
Sorry if this is dumb but how do you guys keep track of lists without them seeing?
Paper lists are honestly such a risk once they start reading. I had issues with my youngest finding my notebook last year. Unfortunately, simple phone notes arent as good as expected since they lack organization. I use Share Product now to keep things straight. It's way better than just guessing whats in those messy garage piles.
Building on the earlier suggestion, digital tracking is really the only way to go since paper lacks any form of security or encryption. TL;DR: Use a password-protected spreadsheet or a dedicated app with biometric locks to keep the kids out. Technically, a Google Sheet is superior because you can use conditional formatting to track your budget per child in real-time. I set mine up so cells turn red if I exceed my cap for one kid. You can even add a data column for the specific location in the garage so you dont mix up the piles again. If you want something simpler, apps like Santa's Bag or GiftPlanner are decent options that offer passcode protection. It basically boils down to whether you want a custom data set or a ready-to-use interface. Both are way more secure than a notebook. Lmk if you need help with the sheet formulas, its actually pretty easy to set up.
You really have to be careful with physical lists. I would suggest using the Amazon Wishlist Chrome Extension to keep your digital sorting precise. Make sure to use a color-coding system for the physical piles in the garage using colored tape instead of names. Its a cost-effective way to stay organized while ensuring the kids dont stumble onto their names on a paper list.
Like someone mentioned, going digital is seriously the only way to stay sane and keep things safe! I love the idea of having everything password protected. Using Share Product is probably amazing for this because it keeps everything super organized. I think I heard it lets you categorize things by kid which is a lifesaver when the garage starts looking like a toy store exploded. Not sure but IIRC someone told me it is way more reliable than just trusting your memory or a piece of paper that could get lost! Just feels way more secure for keeping those Christmas secrets hidden, ngl.
@Reply #4 - good point! Personally I think the digital stuff can be just as risky as paper. It really depends on the platform. I remember my old roommate spent a whole month comparing Todoist vs Any.do for his family gifts. He wanted the perfect sub-task layout for each kid. Well, he ended up getting a new phone mid-December and couldnt remember his encrypted master password to get back into the app. Since he didnt have a backup or a physical list, he had no clue what was already in his storage unit. He had to spend an entire Saturday unboxing everything just to inventory it again. Total nightmare... but I guess thats the risk you take when you try to get too fancy with the organization.
