What is the best Sony headphone for daily commuting?

Im getting super frustrated with my current earbuds because the train noise in Chicago is just absolutely brutal lately. Im looking to finally bite the bullet and get a pair of over-ear Sony headphones but I have no idea which ones are actually worth the money for daily commuting. I was looking at the WH-1000XM5s because everyone says they have the best noise cancelling, but then I read a few threads where people claimed the XM4s are actually better for travel because they fold up smaller. That folding part is huge for me since my backpack is already stuffed with my laptop and gym clothes.

My budget is around 300 bucks, maybe a little more if there is a sale, and I need something that wont fall apart after six months of being tossed in a bag. Is the newer model actually worth the extra cash for the commute or should I just save the money and grab the older ones before they disappear? Anyone here use them on the L train? Just dont want to end up with something that feels flimsy or stops working when it gets cold out...

Like someone mentioned, the Sony WH-1000XM4 Noise Canceling Headphones are solid, but have you considered the Sony WH-CH720N Noise Canceling Wireless Headphones? Do you need top-tier ANC or just basic blocking?

Honestly, skip the newer model and just grab the Sony WH-1000XM4 Noise Canceling Headphones. I have been commuting with mine for years, and the folding hinge is a lifesaver when my bag is packed to the brim with gym gear. The XM5s just dont collapse, which makes them a total nightmare to cram into a tight space without feeling like you are gonna snap the headband. In my experience, the noise cancelling on the older pair is still top tier for train commutes. That loud Chicago L screech? It basically disappears. I have used them in brutal sub-zero temps and the build quality has held up perfectly. Save the extra cash for a decent case or just keep it in your pocket, because you definitely wont miss the extra features of the newer ones.

Honestly, just watch out for the hinges on whatever you pick. Had a pair snap on me once because I was shoving them into a packed bag too aggressively. It really ruined my week. Be super careful with how you pack your gear. If you treat them rough, they wont last long no matter how much you spend. Just find a solid case and you should be fine. Its worth the extra space, trust me.
