Hey everyone! I’ve been shooting with my Sony a7S III for a while now, but I’m finding the small flip screen really limiting for critical focus and nailing exposure on professional sets. I’m looking for an external monitor that can handle the 4K 10-bit output smoothly. Since I do a lot of outdoor filming, high brightness is a must, and I’m also considering if I should go for something like the Atomos Ninja V to unlock ProRes RAW recording. I’ve looked at some SmallHD options too, but the price difference is significant. Which monitors are you guys using for your a7S III rigs to ensure the best color accuracy and reliability during long shoot days?

sooo i stumbled upon this today and honestly, the a7S III screen is such a pain on sunny days. if you're looking for value without the SmallHD tax, i think you gotta decide if ProRes RAW is a dealbreaker or not. here's what I recommend:

* Atomos Ninja V 5.2" 4K HDMI Recording Monitor: this is the go-to for a reason. it unlocks the 12-bit RAW, but remember the extra costs for SSDs and batteries add up fast. it’s 1000 nits, which is decent but might be tricky in direct sun.
* PortKeys LH5P II 5.5-inch 2200nit High Brightness Monitor: if you dont need RAW, this one is AMAZING for outdoor shoots. it’s 2200 nits (super bright) and even has wireless control for ur camera.

id suggest the PortKeys if you just want to see ur focus better, but the Ninja V if you definitely want that 10-bit ProRes workflow. be careful with power tho, they both eat batteries lol. anyway, gl! 👍

sooo honestly smallhd prices are like CRAZY. i think a decent budget option is the Feelworld LUT7 7 Inch Ultra Bright 2200nit Field Monitor. it’s basically $250 and 2200 nits is literally enough for direct sun... i mean, it works for me!

- Feelworld LUT7 7 Inch Ultra Bright 2200nit Field Monitor (~$250)
- Portkeys PT6 5.2 Inch 4K HDMI Touchscreen Monitor (~$170)

idk if u *really* need prores raw, but these save a ton of money. gl!

Honestly, the gap between the premium brands and the mid-range ones has closed so much lately. SmallHD basically owns the high-end set market because of PageOS and their ecosystem, but the hardware specs on the cheaper brands are catching up way faster than I expected. Youre basically paying for the software reliability and the mounting points at this point, which is wild compared to how it was a few years ago. It realy comes down to if you need that specific workflow or just a bright panel.
