Need a portrait lens for my a7R V and a7 IV ASAP, like before a shoot this Saturday in Chicago. I looked at the Sony 85mm 1.4 GM and the Sigma 85mm art. Read the Sony is sharper but the Sigma is cheaper, yet Im totally torn on weather the extra grand is worth it for my client work. Which one should I actually buy today?

Regarding what #1 said about "Honestly, grab the Sony FE Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM..."

  • I actually went a totally different route for my client stuff and have no complaints at all.
  • Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM gives insane background separation, super sharp even wide open.
  • Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN Art if you need something wider for environmental portraits in the city. Honestly that 135mm is magic on the a7R V tho.

Honestly, grab the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM if you need that extra edge in resolution for the a7R V sensor. I tested both side by side last month and the Sony has slightly better micro-contrast and faster AF tracking for client shoots. The Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art is sharper in the extreme corners wide open tho, and way cheaper. If budget is tight, get the Sigma. But for paid work on high-mp sensors, Sony wins.

@Reply #2 - good point! Seriously though, Chicago weather in March is brutal for outdoor shoots. Make sure you bring extra hand warmers and coffee for your client, trust me they will appreciate it way more than the glass! anyway lol
