What is the absolute best fast prime lens for portrait photography on the Sony a7 series right now? Ive been shooting with the A7III for about five years now, mostly doing street stuff and some landscape work, but a buddy of mine asked me to shoot his engagement photos next month and honestly, my current gear just isnt cutting it for that specific look I want.
I have the 24-70 f/2.8 G Master, which is obviously a workhorse, but I really want that buttery, dreamy background separation that only a super fast prime can give you. Im looking at the 85mm range mostly because I love the compression, but part of me is tempted by a 50mm f/1.2 if I can find a deal. My budget is around 1500 bucks, give or take, since I dont want to go completely broke before the holidays.
Ive been scouring the used market here in Chicago, but there are just so many choices and I keep getting overwhelmed by the reviews. Is the Sony 85mm f/1.4 GM still worth it today or is the autofocus too sluggish compared to the newer Sigma Art stuff? I know the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN is supposed to be tack sharp, but I wonder if it lacks that certain something in the bokeh department. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and save up for the 1.2? I guess Im just worried about the weight since I have a bad back from carrying my heavy kit bag around the city all day. Has anyone here switched from the GM to the Sigma or vice versa and actually regretted it? Really need something reliable for this shoot because I cant afford to miss focus when they are standing there looking all romantic...

Adding my two cents here. Are you planning on shooting mostly wide open or stopping down a bit for group shots?
Honestly, skip the original Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM lens. I owned it for years and unfortunately the autofocus motor is just too noisy and slow for modern mirrorless bodies. It struggles with eye-tracking in low light which is a nightmare for engagement shoots. I ended up switching to the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art and the difference is massive. It is significantly lighter on my back too. The sharpness at f/1.4 is frankly ridiculous compared to the GM version. Some people argue about the bokeh rendering, but honestly the Sigma is more consistent and I have had way fewer missed shots since the switch. If you really need that dreamy f/1.2 look, save your cash because the weight of the Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM might just wreck your back during a long session.
