Im so stoked because I finally managed to snag a PS5 last week and honestly my game library is already getting way too big for the base storage lol. Since my old PS4 Pro is just gonna get handed down to my little brother, I figured why not upgrade both while Im at it? I keep reading online that the WD_BLACK SN850X is basically the gold standard for the PS5 but then other forums claim the Samsung 990 Pro is way faster and worth the extra cash. Honestly Im kinda confused because some of those benchmarks seem super specific to PC rigs and I dont know if I really need to drop like 150 bucks on a drive if the performance difference is barely noticeable for just loading up Elden Ring.
For the PS4 Pro, I saw a bunch of people saying any basic SATA SSD will do, but there are so many cheap off-brand ones on Amazon that look super sketchy. My budget is probably around 200 total for both upgrades since I just dropped a bunch of cash on the console itself. Im trying to get this sorted by next weekend so I can actually install my backlog without deleting everything every five minutes. Do I really need to spring for the high-end Gen4 stuff for the 5, or should I just grab whatever is on sale at Best Buy and call it a day?
Honestly, spending top dollar on the 990 Pro for a console is a waste. I had issues with thermals on cheaper drives, so definitely stick to these for better stability:
Unfortunately, the expensive drives are overkill for consoles. Save cash and get these reliable options instead:
Omg I am in the exact same boat as you! I have been stressing over these upgrades for like two weeks and I still have zero clue what to actually buy.
