Ive been gaming on my old launch PS4 Pro forever now and honestly the loading times are starting to drive me insane especially with games like FF7 Rebirth and Cyberpunk taking like two minutes just to fast travel. I know the console is only USB 3.1 gen 1 and has a SATA 2 internal bus so swapping the internal drive isnt really worth it since the USB port is actually faster than the internal mobo connection anyway. But Im stressing out because I keep reading about issues with drives disconnecting in Rest Mode or causing corruption errors and I really dont wanna lose my saves. Im in Canada and trying to keep the budget around 150 bucks for a 1TB or 2TB drive. Should I just grab a standard Samsung T7 or SanDisk Extreme or is there some weird compatibility quirk with the older Pro firmware I need to watch out for before I drop the cash...

Had a moment to think about this more since im running basically the same setup. Are you planning on upgrading to a ps5 anytime soon, or is the pro gonna be your main machine for a while? Cause if you are sticking with the pro for a bit, buying a Samsung T7 1TB Portable SSD is honestly a solid move. It usually sits right around your budget here in Canada and speeds up loading times massively compared to the stock mechanical drive. Just plug it in and formatting takes like two minutes. Ngl though, if you ever think you might jump to a ps5, grabbing a 2TB drive right now makes way more sense since games are just getting massive. Let me know what your upgrade plans are and id be happy to suggest a few other options.

> trying to keep the budget around 150 bucks for a 1TB or 2TB drive ^ This. Also, prices in Canada are wild rn. I grabbed a Samsung T7 1TB Portable SSD last year and it cut my load times in half, but watch out for the SanDisk ones cause some batches had bricking issues. If you want a 2TB close to that budget, look at the Crucial X6 2TB Portable SSD instead, though it runs a bit slower on sustained writes.

Honestly dont stress too much about rest mode corruption, ive been running an external drive on my pro for ages and never had that happen once. Just make sure you manually close your game before putting it in rest mode and you should be totally fine. For your budget up here in Canada, grabbing a Samsung T7 1TB Portable SSD is probably your best bet. You can usually find it right around $120 to $130 CAD on amazon or at Best Buy when its on sale. It totally transforms games like cyberpunk and ff7, load times drop down to like 20 or 30 seconds compared to that ancient stock hard drive. I wouldnt bother with the extreme speed stuff or weird rugged models because the ps4 pros usb ports cant even use those speeds anyway. The t7 is super compact, just plugs right in with the included cable, and formats super easy in the playstation settings. No weird firmware quirks to worry about either, Sony patched most of those disconnect bugs out ages ago. Just plug it in, move your heavy games over, and enjoy actually being able to play instead of staring at loading screens.
