Which external microphone is best for Sony compact camera vlogging?

I’ve been using my Sony ZV-1 for travel vlogging, but the internal mic really struggles with wind noise outdoors. I need something compact that won't make my setup too bulky or block the flip screen. Should I look at a small shotgun mic or a wireless system for better clarity? Which mic is your go-to for Sony compacts?

yo, honestly I've tried many setups and the Sony ECM-G1 Ultracompact Shotgun Microphone is SO good for the ZV-1. It's basically tiny and uses the hot shoe so you wont have messy cables blocking your screen. I think it's lowkey the best for wind cuz of the deadcat it comes with. if you want wireless tho, Sony ECM-W2BT Wireless Microphone is also great. gl!

Seconding the recommendation above! I used to lug around a massive setup until I realized small is better for travel vlogs.

* Sennheiser+MKE+200+On-Camera+Directional+Microphone&linkCode=osi&tag=5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 200 On-Camera Directional Microphone is amazing cuz it has a built-in shock mount.
* Rode VideoMicro II Ultracompact On-camera Shotgun Microphone is super cheap and realy lightweight tho.

Basically, skip the bulky gear and go for a battery-free shotgun mic. cheers!

Quick reply while I have a sec. Tbh, I’ve done a lot of market research on this because I’m always cautious about audio reliability. In my experience, the big brand comparison comes down to whether you use the standard 3.5mm jack or the proprietary digital interface on the shoe. I used to struggle with the noise floor on my older gear, but I eventually moved to a setup that utilizes the digital connection directly. It basically bypasses the camera's internal preamps which are usually the weak link in these compacts. Not 100% sure if everyone cares about signal-to-noise ratios as much as I do lol, but for me, having that digital signal integrity is an industry standard I won't compromise on anymore. It just feels way more stable for travel when ur constantly moving around and don't want to worry about a loose cable ruining the gain staging.

Ugh, I feel your pain so much. Honestly, trying to get clean audio on these tiny vlogging cameras is such a headache once you step outside. I've spent way too many weekends trying to DIY my own wind shields and custom foam covers because nothing off-the-shelf seems to handle a proper breeze without ruining the compact form factor. Its super frustrating when you have great footage but the audio sounds like a hurricane is hitting the sensor... honestly drives me crazy. Just to get a better idea of what you're dealing with tho, what kind of budget are you trying to stay under? Also, are you mostly vlogging arms length style or are you trying to capture stuff from a distance too?
