so i finally picked up a zv-1 for my tokyo trip next month and the video is great but the audio is honestly a bit thin especially when its windy out. i looked at the rode videomic pro+ since everyone says its the gold standard but it looks massive on this tiny body and i dont want to carry a huge rig. also saw the sony ecm-g1 which is cool cause no cables but some people say the sound isnt much better than the built-in one so im stuck.

here is what im looking for:

  • budget is under 150 bucks
  • needs to be small enough to fit in a jacket pocket
  • good at blocking out street noise

is there a middle ground between those two or should i just stick to the deadcat?

Seriously, the Rode VideoMic GO II Lightweight Directional Microphone is such a gem! It is amazing because it stays light but sounds pro. If you wanna save some money, the Deity V-Mic D4 Mini Compact Mobile Shotgun Microphone is another fantastic pick.

  • GO II: Super versatile and light.
  • D4 Mini: Tiny and great value! Check the B&H YouTube channel for sound tests... it really helped me decide!

Ive tried plenty of these over the years and honestly, sticking a massive mic on a ZV-1 totally kills the portability. For Tokyo, you're gonna be in crowds and tight spaces, so you need something sleek. In my experience, the <a href=" https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt= Sennheiser+MKE+200+Ultracompact+Directional+On-camera+Microphone&BI=8941&KBID=10361&SID=12345&DFF=d50" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 200 Ultracompact Directional On-camera Microphone is the best middle ground for that camera body. Its better than the Sony G1 for a few specific reasons:

  • It has an integrated shock mount inside the housing so there are no flimsy rubber bits to break in your pocket.
  • The super-cardioid pattern is tight enough to actually isolate your voice from the city traffic.
  • The wind protection is built into the housing, though you should still use the included fluffy cover for real gusts. Another technical alternative is the Deity V-Mic D4 Duo Dual Capsule Shotgun Microphone. It has a second mic pointing back at you, which is huge for travel vlogging when you want to narrate while showing the scenery. Both are way under your budget and wont make your rig look ridiculous.

I'm very satisfied with these two for travel:
