Im heading to Tokyo next month and finally ditching my bulky old Manfrotto. My a6700 needs something way more portable for my 6L sling.

Im stuck between the Peak Design aluminum and the Ulanzi Zero Y. The PD is iconic but the Ulanzi is way cheaper and seems lighter. Which holds up better for long exposures?

Are you shooting in windy spots? What is your budget? I am happy with my Benro Slim Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod because:

  • Very stable
  • Safe lock system

Ive been using the Peak Design Travel Tripod Aluminum with my Sony setup for a year now and honestly, I couldn't be happier. For long exposures, stability is everything. Here is my breakdown of the options:

  • Peak Design Travel Tripod Aluminum: Built like a tank. The locking cams are super secure and it packs completely flat, which is perfect for a 6L sling. It is a bit heavy, but I feel totally safe using it.
  • Ulanzi Coman Zero Y Carbon Fiber: Lighter and cheaper, but the center column feels a bit wobbly when extended. I get nervous using it for long exposures in the wind.
  • Sirui Traveler 5C Carbon Fiber: A solid budget alternative. Very light and works well, though it doesn't pack as flat as the PD. For Tokyo night shots, the PD is the safer bet. Let me know if you need more details!

I ran into this exact dilemma when I took my crop-sensor mirrorless to Tokyo last spring. Walking around Shinjuku all day with a heavy rig sucks, so going compact is the right move. But here is a major warning if you plan on doing long exposures: watch out for the center column on these ultra-thin travel tripods. When I set up near the Shibuya crossing, the vibrations from the subway underneath and the wind between buildings caused noticeable micro-jitter in my 10-second shots. If you extend that center column at all, you lose almost all stability. Also, those quick-release plates and slim ball heads can slip if they get any dust in them. Keep the column down, clean the joints regularly, and if you hang your sling from the hook for weight, make sure it touches the ground so it doesnt swing and cause more shake.
