Need an external monitor for my FX30 and new ZV-E10 II ASAP because I have a big wedding shoot in Jersey next weekend and the built-in screens are driving me crazy in the sun. Im torn between the Atomos Ninja and the Feelworld LUT7. My logic was that the Ninja is better for prores if I ever need it, but the Feelworld is way brighter which is huge for outdoor work. Budget is around 600 bucks but I really dont want to overspend if the LUT7 does the job. Has anyone used these on the FX30? Does it balance okay on a small gimbal? Im kinda stressing about the weight...

To add to the point above: if you really need brightness without the weight, look into the Portkeys PT5 II 5-inch 500nits. It is way more gimbal-friendly than the Ninja or LUT7. Honestly, the internal recording is just extra bulk if you dont need ProRes.

  • It keeps the balance tight.
  • Much easier on your wrists. Save the cash and just grab a decent matte screen protector too. Works well enough for me.

Like someone mentioned, weight is a real headache on gimbals. I used a Portkeys LH5P II 2200nit on my setup for a while and it was way easier to balance than those chunky recorders. Since you just need visibility for that wedding, maybe skip the internal recording gear? Be careful with cabling though, those micro-HDMI ports on the ZV-E10 II are super fragile. Just get a cage with a clamp or you will definitely regret it.

Honestly, I feel your pain with those tiny screens in direct sunlight. Been there, done that at a beach wedding last summer and it was a total nightmare. If you are really worried about weight, both of those options are gonna make your life harder on a gimbal, tbh. The Atomos Ninja 5.2-inch 1000nit Monitor is great for ProRes, but it definitely feels a bit clunky for run-and-gun stuff. I ended up grabbing the Feelworld LUT7 7-inch 2200nit Monitor because of that extra brightness, which is a lifesaver outside.

  • The LUT7 is super bright but eats through batteries fast so bring extras.
  • Balancing a gimbal with these setups is tricky, you will likely need counterweights.
  • Skip the heavy cages if you can and go with a simple cold shoe mount to save weight. If you really need that ProRes workflow go with the Ninja, but for just seeing your shot under the Jersey sun, the Feelworld is basically unbeatable.
