Are there any essential remote upgrades for Sony smart TVs?

So I finally upgraded to the A80L last month and honestly the picture quality is incredible but the remote that came in the box is just driving me up a wall. Ive been a Sony guy for like a decade now so Im usually fine with their setup but this specific clicker feels so cheap compared to the actual TV. The buttons are way too small and I keep hitting the wrong ones in the dark which is making my wife super annoyed lol. I need something better ASAP because were hosting a movie night next weekend in my apartment here in Chicago and I dont want to be fumbling with this thing the whole time.

Looking for something that fits these:

  • Must have backlit buttons (huge requirement)
  • Needs to feel premium or at least not like a plastic toy
  • Under $80 if possible but I can stretch to $100 for something really solid
  • Works well with Google TV voice search without lagging out

I heard about that premium Sony remote with the finder function but some people say the battery life is trash. Is there a third party option like a Logitech Harmony alternative now that those are dead? Or should I just bite the bullet and get the official metal one? I just really need something that doesnt feel like a downgrade to the actual panel...

I went through this mess last year. I tried a cheap G7BTS Backlit Bluetooth Remote but it felt like a total toy. Unfortunately, third-party options are slim.

  • Sony RMF-TX910U Premium Backlit Remote feels great but the battery life is honestly trash.
  • Generic backlit replacements usually lack the voice mic or feel even cheaper. Just bite the bullet on the metal Sony one... its the only real path.

To add to the point above: the state of high-end remotes is honestly pretty depressing right now. Ever since Logitech killed off the Harmony line, weve been left with some really mediocre choices. I spent a month testing the SofaBaton X1 Universal Remote with Hub Control and while the hardware feels way more premium than that plastic Sony clicker, the software is just a nightmare to set up. Its frustrating because it has the potential to be the perfect replacement, but the voice command lag on Google TV is real. If you really want that premium metal feel without the high price of the latest models, you might want to look for the older Sony RMF-TX621U Brushed Aluminum Backlit Remote. It is from a previous flagship series but still works perfectly with the A80L. Just a heads up though, I had issues with the backlight sensor being way too sensitive on those older units which basically eats batteries like crazy. Pro tip from the guys over at AVSForum: if you do get the official Sony backlit one, go into the settings and disable the beep for the remote finder. It actually helps the standby battery drain a bit. Also, check out the Bravia subreddits for button remapper app tips. It doesnt fix the cheap feel of your current remote, but it makes the layout less of a headache while you wait for a better hardware option to ship.

Re: "To add to the point above: the state..." - yeah it's pretty bleak. I tried a cheap backlit knockoff and honestly felt like a fire hazard with how hot it got. I spent hours on AVSForum looking for a lead.

Ive been a Sony guy for like a decade now so Im usually fine with their setup but this specific clicker feels so cheap compared to the actual TV." I totally feel your frustration! Honestly, when I first set up my own system, I was shocked by the latency issues on the stock hardware. I spent way too much time testing the response lag between button presses and on-screen execution. It turns out that standard IR is just so outdated for these high-end interfaces! I eventually moved to a model with much better frequency response and the difference is amazing! My search focused on specific technical benchmarks:

  • Low-latency Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity
  • Accelerometer-based motion sensing for the backlight
  • High-density chassis materials for better hand feel The tactile feedback is so crisp now. I learned the hard way that generic replacements often use low-quality internal components that actually hum when the light is active. That was totally immersion-breaking during quiet scenes. My current setup finally matches the high-end processing of the display!
