Hey everyone! I’ve been working on my home studio setup for a bit over a year now, and I’ve finally hit a point where my standard consumer-grade headphones just aren’t cutting it anymore. I’m finding that my mixes sound decent while I’m working on them, but as soon as I test them in my car or on a Bluetooth speaker, the low end is a mess and the highs are way too piercing. It’s clear I need something more accurate, and everyone tells me Sony is the gold standard for this.
I’ve been doing a lot of digging, and I keep seeing the classic MDR-7506 popping up in almost every professional studio photo I find online. People seem to swear by them for their durability and flat response, but I’ve also heard they can be a bit fatiguing during long sessions because of that emphasized high-mid range. On the other hand, I’ve been looking at the newer MDR-MV1 open-back models, which are supposedly incredible for spatial audio and mixing, but they are a significant jump in price.
Then there’s the MDR-M1ST, which I’ve heard is the modern successor to the older models but might be harder to find outside of specific markets. I’m mainly doing a mix of vocal tracking and detailed EQ work, so I’m torn between needing the isolation of a closed-back pair so I don't get mic bleed, and the soundstage of an open-back pair for better depth perception while mixing.
I really want to make an investment that lasts. I’m looking for something that won’t 'lie' to my ears just to make the music sound pretty, but I also don’t want my ears to be exhausted after two hours of editing. Does the legendary 7506 still hold the crown for professional work, or is it worth it to shell out the extra cash for the newer high-end models like the MV1? Which Sony model do you think provides the most honest, 'uncolored' sound for serious studio monitoring?
sooo i totally get the frustration... been there with the 'car test' fail and it's literally the worst. honestly, i have a love-hate relationship with Sony gear. i mean, everyone swears by the classics but they aren't perfect for every situation.
Here's what I recommend based on my experience:
1. The Sony MDR-7506 Professional Large Diaphragm Headphone is the budget king at around $99. BUT, those highs are SO piercing. unfortunately, they really wear ur ears out during long sessions. I had issues with my ears ringing after just two hours.
2. The Sony MDR-MV1 Open-Back Reference Monitor Headphones are incredible for mixing, but at $400, the value prop is kinda rough. plus, you cant track vocals with them cuz of the mic bleed.
3. basically, stick with the 7506 for tracking to save cash, but use a free EQ correction plugin for mixing so they dont 'lie' to you as much. it's way cheaper than the high-end models.
gl with the studio! 👍
So yeah, while the Sony MDR-7506 was already suggested, check out the Sony MDR-CD900ST. It’s the actual Japanese studio standard and way more "honest" for EQ work imo.
* Import it to save cash.
* Closed-back design provides better isolation for tracking.
I’m SO happy with mine; it never lies about the low end. Seriously, it’s a total game changer for monitoring!
