I’m prepping for a 14-hour flight next month and really want to invest in a solid pair of Sony headphones to survive the trip. I’ve heard their noise-canceling tech is top-tier, but I’m torn between the WH-1000XM5 and the older WH-1000XM4s. Since I’ll be wearing them for hours, comfort is my main concern—I really want to avoid that 'clamping' feeling or ear fatigue. I’m also a bit worried about portability, as I’ve heard the newer XM5s don’t fold up as compactly in a carry-on. For those who travel frequently, which model handles engine drone better and stays comfortable for the long haul? Which one is the better investment for a frequent flyer?

> "I’m also a bit worried about portability, as I’ve heard the newer XM5s don’t fold up as compactly in a carry-on." I went through this last year when I was prepping for a massive 14-hour haul to Singapore. Honestly, portability is the big "but" with the newer model. I used to rock the Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones and loved how they tucked into my bag, but when I upgraded to the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones, I had to get used to that bigger case. It definitely takes up more room in a stuffed carry-on, ngl. But technical-wise? The noise canceling on the XM5 is just on another level for long hauls. Basically, like the previous person mentioned, the XM5 uses two processors—the V1 and the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN1—which helps it adapt to cabin pressure changes more smoothly than the older tech. I found that the "Auto NC Optimizer" actually works well for those weird shifts in engine drone during takeoff and cruising. Regarding the "clamping" feeling... I highkey think the XM5 is better because of the "Soft Fit Leather." Its thinner and doesn't push as hard against my glasses. If you really want to avoid ear fatigue altogether, I actually brought my Sony WF-1000XM5 Noise Canceling Truly Wireless Earbuds as a backup. Sometimes switching to buds for an hour or two gives your head a break from any headband pressure. Both are solid investments for frequent flyers tho, just depends if you value space or that top-tier silence!! peace

I'd suggest:
- Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones: best folding (as mentioned).
- Sony WH-CH720N Noise Canceling Wireless Headphones: best budget/weight alternative.
Both handle drone perfectly and honestly wont hurt ur ears!!

^ This. Also, I was pretty disappointed with the build on the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones after using them for a few months. The non-folding design is a huge pain when youre trying to cram stuff into a seatback pocket. Plus, the Auto NC Optimizer is honestly a mess... you cant force it to stay at 100% noise canceling, so it sometimes lets in engine noise if it thinks the cabin is quiet enough. Super frustrating on a long haul. If you're worried about the clamping feeling, you should definitely check out the reviews on RTINGS. They do objective clamping force tests. I found that the Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones actually feel more stable despite being older tech. If you want something lighter to avoid that heavy head feeling after 8 hours, maybe look at the Sony LinkBuds S Noise Canceling Earbuds. They aren't as powerful as the over-ears, but for sleeping on a plane they are way less bulky and dont make your ears sweat as much. Just my two cents... build quality on the newer stuff just isnt what it used to be.

In my experience, you should definitely consider these specs:
- Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones: has dual processors—the V1 and QN1. Honestly, the newer leather is way less "clampy" for long flights.
- Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones: way better for packing—wait no—I mean it's more portable cuz it folds.
I think the XM5 handles engine drone better... but make sure to check ur bag space tho!!
