Which CFexpress Type A cards work best for Sony a1?

I recently picked up a Sony a1 and I am blown away by the speed, but my current V90 SD cards are struggling to keep up with the 30fps burst mode and 8K video recording. I know CFexpress Type A is the way to go, but they are quite an investment.

I have been looking at the Sony Tough series and the ProGrade Digital options, but I am curious if anyone has tried the more affordable alternatives like Lexar or Pergear. I am mainly concerned about buffer clearing speeds during long wildlife sequences and potential overheating during high-bitrate video. For those of you using the a1 daily, which specific cards have proven to be the most reliable and offer the best value?

Late to the party but I gotta chime in cuz the Sony a1 is LITERALLY a beast!! For your situation, I would suggest looking at Lexar or Delkin to get more bang for your buck. Basically, the Sony cards are great but ur paying a huge premium for the branding. Honestly, I think the Lexar Professional CFexpress Type A Card Gold Series 160GB is the sweet spot for value right now. It has a rated sustained write speed that keeps up with the 30fps bursts and 8K video perfectly. Plus, if u jump up to the Lexar Professional CFexpress Type A Card Gold Series 320GB, the price per gig is way better than anything else. I have used them for long wildlife sequences and they dont overheat easily which is AMAZING. Another lowkey great option is the Delkin Devices BLACK CFexpress Type A 160GB. It has a lifetime warranty and highkey rivals the Sony Tough for durability. Pergear is okay for budget stuff but for long sequences?? I mean... I would probably stick to Lexar for that extra peace of mind. Hope that helps! gl!

I think Sony's safer for 8K, so maybe be careful with budget options tbh.

In my experience, when youre shooting 30fps on a beast like the a1, reliability is everything. Like someone mentioned, the Sony cards are the benchmark, but you can definitely get that same stability without paying the full brand tax.

  • Nextorage B1 Pro Series 160GB CFexpress Type A is probably the smartest buy. The company was actually founded by former Sony storage engineers, so the compatibility is basically perfect. Its like getting a Sony card with a different sticker for a better price.
  • Angelbird AV PRO CFexpress Type A 330GB is fantastic if you do a mix of video and stills. Their sustained speeds are super consistent, which helps keep the camera from getting too hot during long 8K clips.
  • Exascend Essential Series 180GB CFexpress Type A is another sleeper pick. Its VPG-400 rated, which is the certification you really want for peace of mind during those long wildlife bursts. Ive tried many brands over the years and honestly, sticking to VPG-400 certified cards is the best way to ensure your buffer clears fast enough. Losing a shot because of a slow card is the absolute worst...
