I'm finally upgrading to the Sony a7C II for a hiking trip, but I’m struggling to find a tripod that matches its compact size. It needs to be light enough for long treks but stable enough for my 24-105mm lens. What’s your favorite ultra-portable option that doesn't compromise on build quality?

tbh i learned the hard way after a flimsy stand almost tipped my rig... seriously scary. I would suggest the Sirui Traveler 5C Carbon Fiber Tripod with B-00K Ball Head for ur Sony a7C II. It’s basically $110, which is a steal. But be careful... that 24-105mm is front-heavy, so you gotta use the center hook for ballast. Better safe than sorry. gl!

I would suggest the Leofoto LS-224C Ranger Series Carbon Fiber Tripod with LH-25 Ball Head. It’s about $160. Unfortunately, I've had issues with flimsy 'travel' legs failing on-site; they're not as stable as expected for a 24-105mm. This design avoids center columns, which eliminates the biggest technical point of failure. Honestly, dont risk ur gear on something less rigid. peace!

In my experience, I once watched a wind gust nearly tip my rig... literally terrifying!! I’d suggest the Ulanzi & Coman Zero Y Lightweight Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod because it’s super compact but actually feels pro for hiking. Just be careful with that heavy lens—always hang your bag on the center hook for safety! TL;DR: Ulanzi & Coman Zero Y Lightweight Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod is fantastic with a counterweight.

Looks like youve already got some solid budget-friendly picks in the mix, but honestly, if reliability is your top priority for a hike, I gotta jump in. Ngl, the 24-105mm can be a bit of a beast on those lighter legs people suggested. If you have the budget, the Peak Design Travel Tripod Carbon Fiber is basically the king of packing efficiency. It fits in a water bottle pocket and the build quality is top notch for about $600. Its super fast to deploy too. But for pure, uncompromising stability, I always point people toward the Gitzo Traveler Series 1 Carbon Fiber Tripod with Center Ball Head. It usually runs around $700-800, which is steep, but the vibrations are non-existent even with the center column up. I dont think anything else really touches Gitzo for long-term durability. Definitely better to spend more now than have a leg lock fail miles away from the trailhead... just my two cents tho!
