Ugh I am so over trying to use the tiny flip screen on my a7S III for these outdoor summer weddings. I missed focus on a couple key shots last weekend because of the glare and honestly Im just fed up with it. I have a big shoot in San Diego next month and I need to figure this out before then. Ive been looking online and everyone keeps saying the Atomos Ninja V is the gold standard but then I see people complaining about the fan noise and the weight. Plus do I even need the recording feature? The a7S III already does 10-bit internal so is it just a waste of money if I dont need ProRes? Then I saw the Shinobi which is lighter but apparently the screen isnt bright enough for direct sunlight according to some YouTube reviews... Im so confused by the mixed info and my budget is strictly under $600 so the Ninja with batteries and an SSD might be pushing it anyway. Is there something better that actually stays visible in the sun without overheating? I just need something reliable that wont die on me mid-ceremony and actually lets me see if my shots are sharp. What are you guys actually using that doesnt break the bank?
I once did a high-noon beach shoot where I totally flew blind because my screen washed out completely. It was stressful. Be careful with the Ninja V because the battery life is honestly terrible for long days. I would suggest checking out the Portkeys LH5P II 5.5 Inch 2200nit Touchscreen Monitor. Its 2200 nits brightness is a game changer for direct sun and the wireless camera control via Bluetooth is super handy.
