What SD cards are you guys actually using for the a7R VI because im honestly about to throw my camera across the room. I keep getting these annoying write speed errors when trying to film 4k 60p and its driving me crazy. I spent a fortune on some v60 cards thinking they would be fine but the footage keeps lagging or just cutting out mid-take and I have a huge wedding shoot coming up in two weeks in Chicago.
I really dont want to drop another 500 bucks on those crazy expensive Sony Tough cards if I dont absolutely have to but I also cant afford for my gear to fail on me again. Is there a middle ground here or am I just stuck buying the top tier stuff? My nerves are shot because I dont want to look like an amateur when the clients are literally right there watching me. Should I just bite the bullet and get the CFexpress Type A cards or are there some decent UHS-II cards that wont crap out on me during long clips? Im just so tired of my gear not keeping up with what I need it to do...
Ugh, honestly, v60 cards for high bitrate 4k 60p are just asking for trouble. Those write speeds are just way too inconsistent for the sustained data rates these newer Sony bodies demand. Unfortunately, the buffer fills up super fast, and that is exactly why you are getting those errors. I had issues with that exact setup until I finally switched over. If you dont want to go full CFexpress, you really need to be using cards rated for V90 at the bare minimum. I have been running ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II V90 256GB for a while now and they hold up consistently under heavy load. They handle the throughput without choking during long takes. It sucks to spend the extra cash, but for a wedding, you really cant risk it. Just bite the bullet on those or the Sony Tough SDXC UHS-II V90 128GB and you will finally have some peace of mind.
Listen, I feel your pain. I had the exact same panic during a shoot last summer when my footage started dropping frames mid-interview. It turned out my V60 cards just couldnt handle the sustained bitrate once the buffer hit its limit. If you really want to avoid the massive price tag of those CFexpress cards but need reliability for wedding work, you absolutely have to switch to V90 cards. They maintain that minimum 90MB/s write speed which is the magic number for avoiding those annoying buffer warnings. I swapped over to using the ProGrade Digital V90 256GB SDXC UHS-II cards and honestly havent had a single glitch since. They are way more stable than V60s and definitely hold their own. If you want to be extra safe for your Chicago gig, maybe look into Lexar Professional 2000x 128GB SDXC UHS-II as well. Just make sure you double check that the cards are actually V90 rated, not just high speed marketing fluff. Be careful with some of the cheaper brands online, they say they hit those speeds but they throttle like crazy after ten minutes of recording. Given you have a wedding coming up, I would suggest picking up two of these and testing them with some long clips at home first. Dont risk your reputation on a card you havent pushed to the limit yet!
Finally someone says it. Ive been thinking this for a while but wasnt sure.
