Essential gimbal and cage recommendations for the Sony FX3 cinema setup?

Hey everyone! I finally pulled the trigger and upgraded to the Sony FX3 for my documentary and commercial work. While the internal stabilization is great, I’m quickly realizing that for professional shoot days, I really need a solid rig to make it more ergonomic and functional.

I’ve been looking at cages first. I want something that provides plenty of mounting points for a monitor and a V-mount battery plate, but it absolutely can't obstruct the top handle or the XLR module, as those are crucial for my audio setup. I’m a bit torn between a full cage for protection or a half-cage to keep things lighter.

Regarding gimbals, I’m worried about finding one that can handle the FX3 plus a heavier lens like the 24-70mm GM II without the motors stressing out or the body hitting the back arm during vertical tilts. I’ve been eyeing the DJI RS 3 Pro, but I'm curious if there are other options that offer better clearance for this specific camera body. Does anyone have a tried-and-tested cage and gimbal pairing that feels perfectly balanced and allows for quick transitions between handheld and gimbal work?

Ok so, congrats on the FX3! Honestly, it's a total beast once it's rigged right. I’ve been using mine for years and I’m super happy with my current setup. For the cage, I think you definitely want the SmallRig Sony FX3 / FX30 Cage 4183. It’s a full cage but it’s designed to not block the XLR handle at all... super important cuz those preamps are gold. For power and monitoring, I use the SmallRig Compact V-Mount Battery Mounting Plate 2987 and the SmallRig Swivel and Tilt Adjustable Monitor Mount with ARRI-Style Mount 2903B. Regarding gimbals, the DJI RS 3 Pro works well, but the DJI RS 4 Pro actually has better clearance for that heavy 24-70mm GM II lens. I’ve never had the motors stress out. Basically, it’s a rock-solid rig that makes ur transitions way faster. gl!

Saw this earlier but just now responding. Tbh, I've had issues with the FX3 hitting motors, it's sooo annoying. For a budget-friendly setup: * 8Sinn Sony FX3 / FX30 Cage — it's slim and leaves the XLR handle totally free.
* SmallRig Extended Quick Release Plate 3162 — gives the DJI RS 3 Pro way more clearance for that heavy lens. Honestly, this plate is a total lifesaver if you dont wanna spend a fortune. Gl!

Respectfully, I'd consider another option. The Tilta Sony FX3/FX30 V2 Full Camera Cage is basically more modular for the XLR handle, and the Zhiyun Crane 4 has way better motor clearance for that 24-70mm lens.

Just catching up on this thread and honestly congrats on the FX3 upgrade! It is basically the perfect tool for doc work once you get it balanced properly. I have been deep diving into the current market offerings for cages and it is interesting how different companies approach the XLR handle clearance issue - some go for a minimalist wrap while others build an entire ecosystem around it. Before I weigh in on specific brands I am curious about your typical shoot day. Are you mostly doing high-end commercial work where you have a crew to help with a heavy rig or are you solo-op in the field for the documentary stuff? Also what is your budget looking like for the whole kit? I find that some of the higher-end brands offer much better long-term reliability for professional use but the price jump can be pretty steep compared to the usual suspects mentioned here. Let me know because that really narrows down which direction makes the most sense for a pro setup!
