so I finally upgraded my gear and got a Sony a7R VI for doing some local real estate shoots and family portraits around Chicago next month, but honestly Im completely overwhelmed right now. sorry if this is a dumb question but I keep seeing people talk about cages and grips and I have no idea if I actually need one or which one to buy. my logic was that since the camera body itself was already so expensive (Im kinda stretching my budget as it is, hoping to keep under 150 bucks for this part), it should be fine on its own? but then I held it for more than ten minutes and my hand started cramping up, plus I feel like I am gonna drop the thing every time I try to mount it to my cheap tripod. Ive been looking online for the last three hours and my brain is fried from all these weird model numbers and brand names that all sound the same. do I need a full cage or just one of those bottom plate grip things? and why are there so many holes everywhere on them??
That hand cramp is no joke with the stock body. Back when I started doing real estate gigs, I made the mistake of buying a massive full cage and hated how heavy it got after a long shoot. For what youre doing, skip the cage entirely. An L-bracket or a simple baseplate is way better and keeps you well under budget. Check out something like the SmallRig Baseplate for Sony Alpha Series for a cheaper way to fix that grip issue without adding dead weight.
Congrats on the new body! That grip cramp is so real with these smaller cameras. Since youre doing real estate and portraits, you honestly dont need a giant full cage blocking all your buttons.
Spot on with skipping the heavy cages. If you want better ergonomics without breaking the bank, grab the SmallRig Ergonomic L-Bracket 4006 for around fifty bucks, it fixes hand fatigue instantly.
