Need to figure this out fast cause Im shooting a wedding in Chicago next weekend and my setup is currently dying too quick. Ive been looking at the Sony VG-C4EM online for my a7 IV and FX3 B-cam, but the price tag hurts and Ive seen some mixed forum posts about weather sealing holding up in rain. Then I looked at the Meike third-party grips since theyre way cheaper, but half the reviews say they drain batteries even when the camera is turned off which sounds like a total nightmare. My logic was to just bite the bullet on OEM so I dont miss a shot, but is the extra weight actually worth it for long events? What are you guys using that wont crap out on me?
That battery drain issue on third party grips is unfortunately super real. Had my Meike MK-A9II Vertical Battery Grip kill two spares sitting in my bag last season, absolute nightmare during a shoot.
Yeah third party battery drain is no joke. I ditched those a while back and went a totally different route for long wedding days.
Like someone mentioned, third-party battery drain is honestly a massive headache when you are on a tight schedule. Since you need a reliable fix before next weekend and do not want to drop insane cash on the official Sony grip, grab an external power solution instead. A proper power bank setup using a SmallRig VB99 Pro V Mount Battery 99Wh mounted to your rig lets you hot-swap without messing with internal doors. Pair it with a dummy battery like the Dummy Battery NP-FZ100 and you will easily get through a massive wedding day without constantly stressing about juice. The weight distribution is way more balanced on your shoulder rig too, which saves your wrists big time during long receptions.
