I'm looking to upgrade my street photography setup for better low-light performance. Currently shooting with a Sony A7IV but struggling when the sun goes down. Need something fast that during long walks.
Budget is around $1,000-1,500. Priority is sharpness wide open and quick focusing. Prime or zoom recommendations welcome!
What's your go-to Sony lens for shooting street scenes after dark?
The Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM has been my go-to for night street photography. The f/1.4 aperture is crucial for those dark alleyways, and the autofocus remains reliable even in dim conditions. Yes, it's expensive, but the image quality is worth every penny. The 35mm focal length gives you that ideal street perspective without forcing you to get uncomfortably close to subjects.

I'd recommend the Sony FE 24mm f/1.4 GM. It's slightly wider than the traditional 35mm, which I find perfect for urban environments where you need to capture more context. The wide aperture handles low light beautifully, and it's surprisingly compact for a lens with these specs. The GM line's build quality also means it can handle being knocked around a bit during your street sessions.
If budget is a concern, the Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 is an excellent value option. While longer than typical street photography lenses, it lets you capture candid moments from a comfortable distance, especially useful at night when people might be more sensitive to photographers. The f/1.8 aperture is still plenty fast for low light, and it's significantly lighter than Sony's GM options.
Lol I was literally about to post the same thing. Glad someone else brought it up.
