Best wide-angle prime lens for Sony a7C II street photography?

So I finally pulled the trigger on the Sony a7C II after months of debating and I'm honestly obsessed with how small it is but now I'm hitting a wall with lenses. I'm heading out to Tokyo in about three weeks for a big solo trip and I really want to stick to a single wide prime for street stuff because I want to travel light - literally just one camera and one lens in a small sling bag. I've been doing a ton of reading and keep seeing the Sony 24mm f/2.8 G mentioned as the perfect companion because of the size. It looks amazing on the body and keeps that rangefinder vibe going but I'm super worried about the f/2.8 aperture. I plan on doing a lot of night shooting around Shinjuku and Golden Gai where the alleys are super dark and I'm not sure if f/2.8 is gonna cut it or if I'll just end up with a bunch of noisy shots.

Then I started looking at the 35mm f/1.8 which is obviously faster but then I'm like is 35mm even wide enough for those tight streets? Some people say 35mm is the classic street focal length but when I look at 24mm shots they just seem more immersive for that urban feel. I also saw some stuff about the Samyang 24mm f/1.8 which is cheaper and faster but I've read so many horror stories about their quality control and getting a "bad" copy that I'm scared to risk it right before a big trip. My budget is around 700ish bucks maybe a bit more if it's really worth it. I just want something sharp that feels balanced on the compact a7C II frame without being a giant brick. Should I just suck it up and get the 24mm G and rely on the IBIS or is there something else I'm missing that hits that sweet spot for wide-angle street work?

Unfortunately, f/2.8 is kinda disappointing for dark alleys. Check Sony Alpha Blog's MTF charts, then look at the Sigma 24mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary... it's faster and usually way cheaper.

@Reply #2 - good point! I once brought a budget lens to Kyoto and the autofocus kept hunting in those dark alleys... it was a nightmare. Since you're heading to Tokyo, you might want to consider:

  • Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 for more light
  • Sony FE 28mm f/2.0 for a wider view I would suggest the 35mm tho. Its reliable and doesnt feel like a brick. Just be careful with third-party glass right before a big trip!

Grab the Sony FE 24mm f/2.8 G! I pushed the 7-stop IBIS to 1/10s in Golden Gai and it stayed sharp. Its a total technical powerhouse, honestly!
