I seriously feel like I made a huge mistake buying this a7c ii because I spent all this money and the pictures I am getting with the little lens that came in the box look basically like my iphone 14. My brother told me I needed a full frame camera for my big trip to Italy in three weeks but I have no idea how any of this works and the menus are like a different language to me. its so frustrating because the camera itself is small which I like but every lens I look at online looks like a giant heavy telescope and that defeats the whole point of me getting a small camera to begin with. I just want to take nice pictures of my wife and the buildings without carrying a ten pound weight around my neck.

I think I want what people call a prime lens because I read somewhere they are better for beginners who want that professional look. I googled it and it means it doesnt zoom which sounds really annoying to be honest but everyone says they take better pictures at night and I really want to take photos of the streets in Florence and Rome when it gets dark without everything looking all grainy and gross. I have maybe 500 or 600 dollars left in my budget which isnt much after what I paid for the camera body but I really need something that isnt going to weigh me down while I am walking ten miles a day.

I am so lost with the numbers too like what is 35mm vs 24mm or 50mm and why does one cost 300 and the other 1300? I just want something that makes the background look blurry and pretty but stays small enough to fit in my small daily bag or even a jacket pocket. Here is what I am looking for if anyone can help:

  • something really light and tiny
  • good for night time or indoor restaurants
  • under 600 dollars
  • easy to use for someone who knows nothing

is there like one specific lens that is perfect for this camera that I can just leave on the whole time? I dont want to be carrying a bag of extra gear or swapping parts in the middle of a tour and I am honestly getting so stressed out that I might just sell the whole thing if I cant figure this out...

Regarding what #2 said about choosing a distance, I had issues with the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 being sluggish. The Samyang AF 35mm f/1.8 FE is way faster and wider for buildings tho.

Quick question though, do you think youll be taking more shots of the whole street or closer photos of your wife? In my experience, the Sony FE 40mm f/2.5 G is the perfect middle ground. Basically, lower numbers like 35mm see more of the scene, while 50mm zooms in. This 40mm is tiny and built for your camera. It creates that blurry background by using a wide aperture... it helps a ton in those dark Italian alleys.

I once missed a perfect shot of my wife in Rome because I was fumbling with a heavy lens in a crowd. I would suggest you look at the Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 Compact Prime. Way better for low light.

  • fits your budget
  • tiny for all-day walking
  • great blurry backgrounds Be careful dont get a 50mm first. It might feel too tight for narrow streets.
