Hey everyone! I finally pulled the trigger and upgraded to the Sony a7C II. I am absolutely loving the autofocus and the compact form factor so far. I bought this specific camera because I am tired of lugging around a heavy backpack full of gear when I am traveling, but I still want that full-frame look and quality for my memories.

I have a big trip coming up next month through some narrow streets in Tokyo and then over to Italy for some coastal hiking. My goal is to find one perfect compact prime lens that can stay on the camera about 90 percent of the time. I want something that is small enough to fit into a tiny three-liter sling bag without feeling like a brick against my side or dangling awkwardly on a neck strap.

I have spent way too much time watching reviews and I am currently torn between a few specific options:

  • The Sony 40mm f/2.5 G: I love the build quality and the dedicated aperture ring, but I am worried 40mm might feel a bit tight for indoor shots or tight European alleys.
  • The Sony 35mm f/1.8: People rave about the sharpness and the faster aperture is tempting for night shots, but I wonder if it starts to make the setup feel front-heavy and lose that compact magic.
  • The Samyang 35mm f/2.8: It is incredibly tiny and would make the kit very pocketable, but I am concerned about whether the autofocus and sensor resolution of the a7C II will outclass the lens.

I am really looking for that sweet spot where the camera feels like a premium point-and-shoot but performs like a professional tool. I usually shoot a mix of street scenes, environmental portraits, and some architecture when I am on the road.

For those of you who have been using the a7C II for travel photography, what is your favorite compact prime that balances size and image quality? If you could only take one small prime for a two-week trip, which one would you pick?

Curious about one thing: are you planning to use the in-camera APS-C crop mode much, since the Sony a7C II Compact Full-Frame Camera has that 33MP sensor for extra reach? Quick tip: I would suggest definately skipping the Samyang AF 35mm f/2.8 FE Lens cuz the AF is slow. Does a physical aperture ring matter more to you than the f/1.8 speed?

Yo, I feel u on the gear struggle. A while back I lugged a huge zoom through Europe and literally hated my life by day three, so the Sony a7C II Mirrorless Camera is definately the right move. I spent way too much time obsessing over the technical specs of these primes before I finally settled on a kit. For your situation, I would suggest the Sony FE 40mm f/2.5 G. I know you're worried about it being tight, but 40mm is actually closer to the human eye's natural field of view than 35mm. From a technical standpoint, this lens is a beast... it has dual linear motors that keep up with the AI autofocus perfectly. Plus, it weighs almost nothing. If you're reallyyy worried about price vs performance, look at the Samyang AF 35mm f/1.8 FE. It's way cheaper than the Sony version and actually lighter too, coming in at around 210g. It gives you that f/1.8 for night shots without the front-heavy feel of the Sony FE 35mm f/1.8. Just be careful with the build quality on the Samyang... it feels a bit plastic compared to the G-series. If you want that premium point-and-shoot feel, the 40mm is the winner. I've found that in tight alleys, you can just step back two inches or use a panorama sweep. Lesson learned: the best lens is the one that doesnt make you want to leave the camera in the hotel room. Good luck in Tokyo!

Honestly, if youre worried about 40mm being too tight for those narrow alleys, look at the Sony FE 28mm f/2. Its an older lens but it still holds up well on that 33MP sensor imo. Quick tip: since you have the extra resolution, shooting at 28mm gives you the width you need for architecture, and you can just crop into a 35mm field of view later. Its way more versatile for a one-lens trip than a 40mm. Plus, you can usually find it used for a total bargain. Its super light and fits the compact vibe perfectly without breaking the bank.
