honestly im so sick of deleting games every single time a new update drops like why is call of duty 200gb now?? i just got my ps5 pro and i already have zero space left it’s actually ridiculous. i tried using an old external drive but the loading times are trash and half my games wont even play from it. i need a proper nvme expansion like yesterday. i have about 160 bucks to spend and im looking on amazon right now but there are way too many options and i dont want to buy something that overheats. whats actually the best one for the pro that wont break the bank? i need to get this sorted before the weekend...
I've been messing with consoles since the launch of the original PS1 and honestly, when it comes to storage, you really dont want to cut corners on the cooling part. The PS5 Pro gets pretty toasty under heavy load so a good heatsink is non-negotiable in my experience. If you have about 160 bucks right now, you can actually get some really top-tier stuff that'll last the life of the console. The gold standard for me has always been the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB with Heatsink. Ive put these in three different builds lately and they never skip a beat. The built-in heatsink is slim enough to fit perfectly in the expansion slot and it handles the heat way better than those cheap off-brand ones you see on Amazon. It is usually right around your budget too. It is probably the most reliable pick if you just want to set it and forget it. Another rock solid choice is the WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB NVMe SSD with Heatsink. I have this one in my own Pro right now and honestly its been flawless. Loading speeds feel basically the same as the internal drive, maybe even a hair faster on some titles. WD has been in the storage game forever so their firmware is usually super stable which matters way more than raw speed numbers imo. Just make sure you dont buy a drive without a heatsink just to save twenty bucks. Buying a separate heatsink and trying to stick it on yourself is just a recipe for a headache if it doesn't fit the slot right. Stick to one of those two and you wont have to worry about your console thermal throttling in the middle of a match... feel free to ask if you need help with the install process.

I totally get the frustration with COD updates, those things are basically digital bloatware at this point. When the PS5 first launched, I tried saving a few bucks by getting a drive without a built-in heatsink and just slapped a cheap third-party one on it. Big mistake. My system would get super loud and eventually, the drive would throttle its speeds, making the loading screens feel just as bad as the external drive you're using now. For your 160 budget, you can actually snag a really solid 2TB drive right now. I ended up switching to the Western Digital WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB NVMe SSD with Heatsink and it's been rock solid. It hits about 7300MB/s which is well above the 5500MB/s Sony recommends. Since the Pro handles higher fidelity stuff, you want that extra headroom. Another decent choice is the Crucial T500 2TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD with Heatsink. It runs slightly cooler in my experience and usually sits right around your price point. Just make sure whatever you pick has that integrated heatsink pre-installed so you dont have to mess around with thermal pads yourself.
Came here to say the same thing lol. Great minds think alike I guess.
Saw this earlier and figured id weigh in since ive built a few PCs and upgraded every console since the PS3. You really dont need to pay the Sony tax for a drive that works perfectly in the Pro. In my experience, some of the less flashy brands actually run cooler because they arent trying to cram everything into a tiny branded box.

To add to the point above: it sounds like the main takeaway is that you cant skip the cooling, especially for a pro. i remember being so stressed about picking my first drive because i didnt want to mess up the console or somehow void the warranty. i spent way too long checking if the heatsink height would actually fit under the plate without touching anything. it's interesting seeing the brand comparison so far. the big names like the ones mentioned definitely offer that peace of mind, but you pay a bit more for the label compared to brands like seagate or sabrent. i'm wondering, are you trying to get the absolute most storage possible for that $160, or is a smaller but faster drive from a major brand more your speed? also, do you feel comfortable installing a separate heatsink yourself if it saves you some cash, or are you looking for an all-in-one solution?
