so i finally pulled the trigger on a sony rx100 vii for my trip to japan next month and man i am so hyped to get out there and start shooting but i have one major problem... this thing is freaking tiny. like i feel like im gonna drop it every five seconds because there is just nothing to hold onto. i have pretty average sized hands but it still feels super slippery and i dont want to spend my whole vacation worrying about it hitting the pavement. i've been looking at a couple different options and honestly i cant decide which way to go.

first i was thinking about the official sony vct-sgr1 shooting grip because it has those built in buttons for the shutter and zoom which seems super convenient for when im doing quick street videos or selfies near the shrines. my logic was that staying brand-name is usually safer but then i saw some people saying the cable is a bit of a mess and it doesnt really offer much extra height if you use it as a tripod. plus its kinda pricey for what it is.

then i found the smallrig l-shape handle and i really like how it adds that wood grain grip to the side of the camera body itself. it makes the whole thing look more like a real camera and seems way more secure for just one-handed snapping while walking around shibuya. but then i wouldnt have the remote buttons. i guess i could buy both but my budget is really capped at like $100 because i already spent way too much on extra batteries and fast sd cards.

i really need something that isnt going to add a ton of bulk to my bag because the whole point of this camera was to stay light and not carry a big rig around. has anyone tried both of these or maybe found a third option that fits the middle ground? i need to order something by next week so it gets here before my flight... help me choose!

To add to the point above: honestly you gotta grab the Sony AG-R2 Attachment Grip!

  • super cheap
  • adds zero bulk
  • amazing texture Its a total game changer!

Totally agree on the AG-R2, its a lifesaver. For extra safety tho:

I was in the exact same boat before my last trip. The RX100 is amazing but yeah, way too slippery. I went with the SmallRig L-Shape Handle for Sony RX100 III/IV/V/VI/VII LCS2438 and honestly i am so happy with how it works. It makes the camera feel like a proper tool without adding much bulk. It adds almost no weight but makes a huge difference in how you hold it. A few reasons why it works well for me:

  • The wood part gives your fingers a real ledge to hook onto.
  • You can still access the battery door without taking the grip off.
  • It actually fits in a large pocket still which is the whole point of a compact. If you want to stay under budget, grab a Peak Design Cuff Camera Wrist Strap too. I use that combo and it feels bulletproof for street shooting. The Sony grip is okay but the cable is kinda annoying after a while and it makes the camera look a bit weird. Stick with the SmallRig and youll be set for Japan!
