I got this Sony RX100 for my trip to Japan next month because it's small and fits in my jacket pocket, but every time I try to film my kids walking around the park the footage looks like an earthquake happened. A guy at the park saw me struggling and mentioned I should look into getting a stabilizer thingy called a gimbal. Honestly I feel kinda dumb even asking this since I barely know how to change the settings on the camera yet but I've been looking at some options online and I'm totally lost.
So I was thinking, I see these huge ones that professional movie people use on YouTube and then I see tiny ones for smartphones. Since my camera is like... in between those sizes? I have no idea if I need a specific one or if they're all universal. My logic was that maybe a bigger one would be better or more stable but then I read somewhere that if the camera is too light it wont even balance correctly? That sounds so confusing. I saw brands like Zhiyun and DJI popping up in my search results but I cant tell if they actually work with the RX100 series specifically or if you need special cables to make the record buttons work from the handle.
My budget is around $250 max because I already spent way too much on the camera itself and the plane tickets. I just want something that isnt gonna take me three hours to set up every time I want to take a quick video of a temple or something. I'm based in Seattle and trying to order something this week so I can practice in the backyard before we fly out. Are there certain top rated ones that people with this small Sony camera always go for? I dont want to buy something and have it be way too heavy to carry around Tokyo all day...
In my experience, the Zhiyun Crane M2S 3-Axis Handheld Gimbal handles the RX100 payload perfectly.
Regarding what #1 said about the Crane, Ive been very satisfied using the Hohem iSteady MT2 3-Axis Camera Gimbal. Its reliable, fits your budget, and the balancing process is quite methodical.
