Anyone know what the best leather cases are for the Sony RX100 series right now? I just picked up a VII for my trip to Italy next month and I'm super paranoid about scratching the screen or the lens since I'm kinda clumsy and tend to just toss my gear into my daypack with my keys and snacks.

I've done a bit of digging and saw the official Sony LCJ-RXK jacket but honestly for like 80 bucks it looks kinda flimsy in the videos I've seen and people say the tripod mount is a pain. Then I looked at those fancy Gariz half-cases which look amazing but they dont actually cover the top or the lens so it doesn't really help me when the camera is buried in my bag. I'm looking to spend maybe $50 to $70 max because the camera itself already cost a fortune lol.

I've seen some cheaper ones on Amazon like MegaGear but the reviews are so hit or miss. Some people say they smell weird or the leather starts peeling off after a few weeks which is definitely not what I want for a long trip.

  • Must fit the VII model
  • Needs to be easy to take off for battery swaps
  • Real leather preferred but high quality faux is okay if it lasts

Does anyone actually use these daily or am I better off just getting a small padded pouch instead?

I have gone down this exact rabbit hole and honestly... are you planning on shooting tons of 4K video or just quick snapshots? I ask because battery life on the VII is pretty short, and if you are swapping cells every few hours, a full leather case becomes a massive chore. I once used a generic ever-ready style case on a trip and it was a total nightmare. The top flap would always dangle and hit me in the eye when I tried to use the pop-up viewfinder. Also, you gotta be careful because some cases like the MegaGear Ever Ready Leather Case for Sony RX100 VII use a screw-in mount that might block the battery door. If you are rushing to change batteries in the middle of a tour, you could easily cross-thread the tripod mount on the camera body. If you are really tossing it in with keys and snacks, maybe skip the leather and look at a Lowepro Tahoe CS 20 Camera Case? It is not as pretty but it actually has thick padding that wont peel off like cheap faux leather does after a week in the Italy heat. Just something to think about before you drop the cash.

Re: "Honestly, the RX100 VII is such a beast..."

  • Having analyzed these setups for years, I found that many budget leather cases fail at the hinge. The VII lens housing is specific, so you need a precision cut. I use the TP Original Sony RX100 VII Genuine Leather Case for its technical build quality.
  • Exact 24-200mm lens clearance
  • Battery and SD card access
  • Reinforced baseplate It handles bag friction much better than the flimsy Sony jacket.

Honestly, the RX100 VII is such a beast for its size but the shell is a total scratch magnet. If you are tossing it in a bag with keys like you said, a half-case is basically useless for protecting the top dials and the lens barrel. Ive used a few different setups for my Sony rigs and honestly, you should just look at any ever-ready leather case from MegaGear. They usually use genuine cowhide which has way better tensile strength than the cheap PU stuff.

  • Leather handles scuffs better than the plastic-y synthetic stuff
  • The snap-off front design is the way to go for quick shots
  • Most modern versions have a dedicated battery flap The leather usually adds about 60-80 grams of weight and just a few millimeters to the depth. If you find leather cases too fussy, just grab a padded sleeve from Lowepro... it is technically more protective for high-impact drops but definitely lacks that vintage vibe for your trip.
