Hey everyone! I’m finally planning a three-week solo trip through Japan and Southeast Asia next month, and I’m trying to get my gear list dialed in. I’ve been filming more frequently for my channel, and while I love the footage I get, my current setup is becoming a bit of a literal pain to carry around.
I’m currently rocking the Sony ZV-E10 with the 10-18mm wide-angle lens and a small Rode shotgun mic. It’s a great, relatively lightweight setup, but I’ve hit a bit of a snag when it comes to stabilization. Up until now, I’ve just been using a basic, cheap plastic gorilla-style pod. Honestly? It’s starting to give me major anxiety. Every time I try to set it up on an uneven stone wall or a windy bridge, I feel like my camera is one gust of wind away from a very expensive disaster. Plus, the joints are starting to lose their tension, which makes getting a level shot almost impossible.
I really need something that’s actually "travel-sized"—ideally something that can collapse down small enough to slide into the side pocket of a standard 25L daypack without sticking out too far. I’m looking for that sweet spot: lightweight enough for all-day hiking but sturdy enough to hold the camera, mic, and maybe a small LED light without vibrating. I’ve been looking at carbon fiber options to save on weight, but I’m open to aluminum if the build quality is there. My budget is roughly $150 to $250, though I’m willing to invest a bit more if it’s a piece of gear that will last me for years.
I’ve seen a lot of hype around the Peak Design Travel Tripod and some of the Ulanzi/Coman collaborations, but there are so many models out there now that I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed.
Does anyone have a "holy grail" tripod they use specifically for their Sony vlogging setup? I’m especially interested in options that are quick to deploy—I hate faffing around with complicated leg locks while the perfect light is disappearing! What are you all using for your travel vlogs?
Curious about one thing: how much height do you actually need for your vlogs?? Honestly, I've had some bad luck with "high-end" travel gear that felt flimsy for the price, so I highkey get the anxiety. It's literally the worst when your gear feels like it's gonna tip over. Before I give full advice, I gotta know if youre mostly doing tabletop shots or if you need it to stand 5 feet tall on a bridge. Japan has some tight spaces, so smaller is usually better, but height is a tradeoff. If youre trying to stay under that $250 limit, here are a few things I've tried: - The Sirui T-025SK Carbon Fiber Tripod with B-00K Ball Head is usually around $160. It's CRAZY light but height is limited. - Unfortunately, I had issues with some "budget" brands, but the Benro Slim Carbon Fiber Lightweight Travel Tripod is pretty solid for about $150 and fits side pockets well.
- If you wanna save cash, the SmallRig CT180 Video Tripod is aluminum but very sturdy for the price. Let me know about the height requirement though, that basically changes everything lol. 👍
I would suggest the Ulanzi & COMAN Zero F38 Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod. It's wayy faster to set up than others because of the integrated quick-release system. * Might want to consider the carbon version for hiking.
* Make sure to keep the center column low in wind!! Seriously, dont risk ur Sony on that plastic pod anymore... it's just not worth it. gl!
This is exactly what I needed to hear. Youre a lifesaver honestly.
100% agree
Saw this earlier but just now responding! I had a total meltdown in Tokyo last year when my old stand almost tipped over at a shrine, so i totally get the anxiety. I switched to the Peak Design Travel Tripod Carbon Fiber and it fits perfectly in my side pocket without that awkward sticking out bit. I also tested the LeoFoto LS-224C Carbon Fiber Tripod with EB-36 Ball Head which is a tank for stability, but the PD wins on deployment speed for sure!
