im finally heading to tokyo in two weeks and im super stoked to bring my a6400 but i need a tripod that is actually tiny. i mean like fits in my 6L sling tiny. ive been looking at the Peak Design travel one (the aluminum version cuz the carbon is so pricey ugh) and the Ulanzi Zero Y which looks like a cheaper clone. but then there is the Manfrotto Pixi which is super small but maybe too short?

my constraints:

  • budget is $200 max
  • needs to be light for walking 20k steps a day
  • stable enough for long exposures near the river

the PD seems the coolest but is it overkill for a small mirrorless? or is the ulanzi better value? help me pick...

Honestly, the PD is way too big for a 6L sling. Over the years, Ive found that compact means different things to everyone. For Tokyo, you want something that just disappears.

honestly check out the Sirui 3T-35K Table Top Camera Tripod. it has an extendable column that helps if you find the pixi too short for your a6400. another solid pick is the SmallRig BUT2664 Tabletop Tripod with Ball Head because its basically indestructible for the price. the sirui is more versatile while the smallrig is sturdier for river shots. both fit in a small sling easily and wont break the bank. lmk if you want more details!

I've spent years testing travel kits for street photography and urban hiking, especially in cities like Tokyo where every gram counts. If you're really trying to fit this into a 6L sling along with an a6400, most traditional travel tripods—including the PD—are going to be a struggle because of their folded width. Honestly, they take up way more room than you think once you add a lens and extra batteries to that bag. For your specific setup and those river long exposures, I'd suggest looking at high-end tabletop versions or ultra-slim models that prioritize weight over height.

  • Leofoto MT-03 Spider Tabletop Tripod with MBH-19 Ball Head: This is my go-to for ultralight setups. It's built like a tank from CNC aluminum. The legs have two sections and fold down to almost nothing. You can easily find a ledge or a wall by the Sumida River to get your long exposures. It is much more stable than a Pixi.
  • Sirui AM-005K Aluminum Travel Tripod with D-10 Ball Head: If you absolutely need some height, this one is much more compact than the PD. It folds down to about 11 inches. It fits the budget perfectly and handles the a6400 with a kit lens or a small prime like a dream.
  • Slik Sprint Mini III GM with SBH-100DQ Ball Head: This is basically the hidden gem of travel tripods. It gets surprisingly high for its size but stays incredibly thin. In my experience, you have to choose between height and portability in a 6L bag. I'd lean toward the Leofoto because it is genuinely pocketable and the stability is unmatched for its size... basically, a tall, thin tripod in a windy city usually leads to blurry long exposures anyway. Stick to something stout that wont shake when the wind picks up near the water.

Omg, im literally in the exact same boat right now! I have been scouring the web for weeks trying to find something that fits in my small 6L sling for a trip to Osaka next month. It is honestly such a headache finding something that actually stays steady for long exposures while being tiny! I am currently looking at the Benro Slim Carbon Fiber Lightweight Travel Tripod because reliability is everything when you are hitting those high step counts...

  • Methodically check the leg tension before every shoot to ensure maximum stability.
  • Utilize a counterweight on the center column to maximize steadiness during those river exposures. I am so obsessed with finding the perfect balance! Tokyo is going to be amazing and i totally feel the struggle of trying to keep the kit minimal but functional.
