I recently pulled the trigger on a Sony a6700 and I am absolutely loving the performance of this little APS-C beast. Since I bought it specifically for its compact size, I want to keep my whole setup as light and portable as possible for an upcoming trip to the Pacific Northwest. I will be doing a mix of landscape photography and some long-exposure shots of waterfalls, so a solid tripod is a must.

I have been looking around, but the market is honestly a bit overwhelming. I am trying to find something that strikes the perfect balance between being lightweight enough to strap to my backpack for miles of hiking, but sturdy enough that it won't topple over in a light breeze. My heaviest setup at the moment is the a6700 paired with the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8, which isn't massive, but I might eventually add a telephoto lens like the Sony 70-350mm into the mix. I really need something that can handle that extra weight without the head creeping during long exposures.

One thing I am specifically curious about is the deployment height. I am about six feet tall, so I would love something that doesn't require me to be constantly hunched over, though I know there is always a tradeoff with compact travel gear. I have looked at the Peak Design Travel Tripod and some of the Ulanzi carbon fiber options, but I am torn on whether the price jump for carbon fiber is actually worth it for a setup this small. I am also slightly concerned about the ball head interfering with the a6700's fully articulating screen when I am trying to film or take shots at low angles.

Does anyone here use an a6700 for travel? What tripod have you found that really fits the compact lifestyle without sacrificing too much stability or height? I am ideally looking to stay under $300, but I am open to suggestions if something is truly a game-changer for this specific camera body. Which models are you all using for your travel kits?

Ok so, I've been shooting with Sony for like, forever, and the a6700 is literally the perfect travel companion!! For your PNW trip, I highkey recommend looking at the Ulanzi & Coman Zero Y Lightweight Travel Tripod. I've used it and it's basically a more affordable, slimmer version of the Peak Design one. It's carbon fiber too, which is seriously a lifesaver when you're hiking miles cuz every ounce counts... plus it handles the Sony E 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 G OSS surprisingly well without any head creep during long exposures! One thing tho, since you're 6ft, most travel tripods are gonna be a bit short, but this one gets decently high. If you're worried about the articulating screen, just grab a SmallRig Baseplate for Sony A6700 4338 and it'll clear the ball head just fine. Another solid choice is the Sirui AM-225 Carbon Fiber Tripod with B-00K Ball Head because it's super stable for those waterfall shots. Honestly, dont go aluminum... your back will thank you later lol. Anyway, hope that helps you out. Cheers!!

Similar situation here

  • Travel tripods generally prioritize portability over maximum height. For tall users, this trade-off often leads to ergonomic issues during long landscape shoots. I found these specs worked for me:
  • Sirui Traveler 7C Carbon Fiber Tripod is tall enough and fits the budget!!
  • Vanguard VEO 3GO 235CB Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod has amazing stability for the 70-350mm. Seriously, the extra height is highkey worth the extra weight! Peace!

For your situation,

  • Aluminum: heavy.
  • Plastic: shaky.
  • Carbon: light.

Honestly my carbon setup is 100% worth it cuz its stiff and basically dont budge!
