honestly fed up with this cheap plastic mount it keeps slipping and ruining my shots. my logic was to just grab a smallrig cage but then i saw the tilta ones and got so excited about the modularity. im in LA and need this by thursday for a music video. best cage and top handle combo for under 200 bucks?

ngl i totally get the frustration with those cheap mounts... unfortunately i had some annoying issues with the Tilta setup where the modular pieces felt a bit loose after a few weeks of heavy use. not as good as expected tbh. if you need to stay under 200 bucks and get it by thursday, just stick with the classics. smallrig is basic but it actually stays tight which is what you need for a music video. heres what i would grab to save some cash:

Unfortunately, most of these modular systems are just more points of failure for a working rig. I had some serious issues with the Tilta side handles before and it is basically just more stuff to wiggle loose when you are moving fast. Since you are in LA and need it by Thursday, honestly just drive over to Samys Camera or check if FilmTools has stock so you can touch them first. You should really look at the Kondor Blue Sony FX3 FX30 Cage with Top Handle. It is built like a tank compared to the cheap stuff and the machining on the cold shoes is actually tight. The problem with the sub-100 buck cages is usually the aluminum quality... they strip out way too easily after a few lens changes. If you want something that actually stays put, skip the modular gimmicks and get a solid single-piece cage design.

@Reply #1 - good point! I had the same experience with those modular parts getting janky over time. Quickly jumping in here since you're on a tight deadline. I've been running the SmallRig Cage for Sony FX3 / FX30 4183 for months and it works well for everything. No complaints. Here is why this combo has kept me satisfied:

  • Built-in NATO rails are a total lifesaver for speed during setups.
  • It has three-point locking so the camera wont twist or slip at all.
  • Plenty of 1/4 inch and 3/8 inch holes for your monitor or mic. I suggest pairing it with the SmallRig NATO Top Handle 2439B. It's super basic but incredibly solid. You can get both for well under $150 total. Check FilmTools in Burbank... they usually have these in stock for same-day pickup.
