Just picked up a ZV-E10 II for my travel vlogs and need audio that doesnt suck. Ive been looking at the Sony ECM-G1 because its compact, but people say the Rode VideoMic Go II is better for wind noise. Im in the UK and have about 150 quid to spend before my trip next month. Which one is actually worth it?

Late to the party but I have been burned by cheap gear on trips before. Honestly, don't skimp on audio if you are recording outside. Over the years, I've learned that having a reliable wireless setup is way less stressful when you are walking around busy city streets. I personally swear by the DJI Mic 2 Transmitter because it just works every time without fail. It is a bit pricier, but for peace of mind, it is worth every penny.

  • Check your gain settings before you actually hit record, it will save your footage.
  • Always bring a backup battery or a Anker PowerCore 10000 Portable Charger because audio gear dies at the worst moments. Take it from someone who has lost good takes to wind noise and dead batteries... prepare for the worst and you will be fine.

Jumping in here, I used to struggle with audio too. If you want something super versatile and cheap, look at the Deity V-Mic D4 Mini Cardioid Microphone. It saves a ton of space and honestly sounds crisp enough for vlogs.

  • It is way under your 150 budget
  • Includes a really solid wind muff
  • Fits right in your pocket I have been really happy with it for travel, plus it leaves cash left over for extra batteries.

TL;DR go with the Rode for wind control. The Sony ECM-G1 Shotgun Microphone is great for size, but the Rode VideoMic Go II Compact Directional Microphone offers a better frequency response and superior wind protection out of the box. Honestly, for UK weather and travel vlogging, the Rode is more versatile. You should grab a decent deadcat too, helps a ton with those windy coastal shots.
