What is the absolute best shotgun mic for the a6400 that wont get in the way of the flip screen? Ive been looking at the Rode VideoMic NTG and the Sennheiser MKE 400, but I keep reading mixed stuff about the battery life and wind noise handling on the Sony mounts. I need something reliable for vlogging around NYC by next weekend since my current setup is failing me constantly. My budget is around 250 bucks max. Is the extra cash for the NTG actually worth it for just talking head videos or am I overthinking the audio quality difference here? Im pretty stressed about getting this right before my trip...

If you need something compact for vlogging, check out the Deity V-Mic D4 Mini. Its super small and wont block the screen at all. It uses plug-in power so you dont have to worry about charging it constantly. For NYC noise, grab a decent deadcat to keep the audio clean. Honestly, for simple talking head shots, this is way more than enough and keeps your setup lightweight.

Adding my two cents here. Honestly, I regret buying the NTG for vlogging because the weight distribution on the a6400 mount feels super flimsy. Unfortunately, my unit had some connection issues after a few weeks of city use, which was not as good as expected. If you want something reliable for NYC, look at these instead:

  • Deity V-Mic D3 Pro Super-Cardioid This is a huge step up. It has a gain knob which is a lifesaver for loud streets and the battery life is insane compared to most.

It handles wind much better than the stock options. Save the extra cash from the NTG and just grab a high-quality wind muff. You dont need fancy features for simple talking head stuff, just something that wont break when you're rushing through the subway.

Honestly, skip the NTG if you're vlogging. It hangs way over the screen and is a pain to balance. I had issues with the weight on my mount causing connection drops.

  • It is super compact.
  • Battery life is solid for city days. Its way better for your NYC trip, trust me. The NTG is overkill for just talking heads anyway...
