im honestly so fed up with carrying around three different primes everywhere i go. swapped from canon last month and grabbed the a6700 for my trip to japan in october, but switching lenses in the middle of a busy street is already driving me crazy and i missed a bunch of shots yesterday because of it. i just want one solid all-around glass that lives on the camera so i can stop stressing. my max budget is around 800 bucks. should i just grab the tamron 17-70mm and deal with the size or is the sigma 18-50mm better for daily walkarounds...

honestly just grab the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 DC DN Contemporary, it fits your budget and saves your back in japan. heres why:

  • tiny and light
  • sharp enough
  • leaves cash for travel snacks

Quick reply while I have a sec... switching lenses on busy streets is the worst, totally feel your pain there. Are you mostly shooting tight Tokyo alleys or more wide landscape stuff? The Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD gives you stabilization which is super handy for night street shots, but yeah, it's definitely bulkier than the sigma.

Just catching up on this thread. Look, if you really want that all-in-one reach without constantly swapping glass, ignore the smaller zooms and look at the Sony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS. Honestly, over the years I have found that for travel, focal length flexibility beats a constant aperture every single time.

  • It is super compact for the range you get.
  • The OSS is a lifesaver on the a6700 since you get extra stability for those longer shots.
  • You wont need to carry anything else at all. Sure, the aperture variable isnt as sexy as f/2.8, but you are gonna miss shots trying to zoom with your feet. Save the extra cash for a decent prime like the Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS if you really need low light performance later. Honestly, for Japan, the 18-135mm is the king of versatility.
