I just picked up the new ZV-E10 II and honestly Im kinda losing my mind trying to pick a lens before my Japan trip in two weeks. The kit lens is fine for photos i guess but when i turn on the active stabilization for vlogging the crop is just insane and i look like a giant thumb on screen. I cant fit any of the background in at all.

Ive been looking at the Sony 11mm f1.8 and a lot of people say its the goat for vlogging because its so light but then i saw the Sigma 10-18mm f2.8 too. Im so confused because everyone says the Sigma is more versatile since it zooms but then others say the f1.8 on the Sony is a must for night shots in Tokyo. My budget is capped at like 600 bucks since i spent so much on the body and i really dont want to buy something and regret it while im halfway across the world. Plus some reviewers say the 11mm is TOO wide and looks weird or distorted? I just want to be able to hold the camera at arms length and actually see where I am without my face taking up 90% of the frame.

Should I just go with the Sony prime or is the Sigma zoom actually worth the extra money for a beginner who just wants to walk and talk?

Just popping in to say be careful about dropping 600 bucks right before a big trip. I spent way too much on gear for my first big solo vlog and ended up stressing over my bank account instead of enjoying the scenery. If you want to save some cash for actually doing things in Tokyo, you might want to consider the Samyang AF 12mm f/2.0 E. Its way more budget-friendly than the Sigma or Sony 11mm and it still handles that active stabilization crop like a champ. I found that using a slightly longer wide like the 12mm actually looks more natural for talking head stuff anyway. Sometimes those ultra-wides make your nose look weird if you hold it too close... ask me how i know lol. If you get a cheaper lens like this you can spend the leftover money on a decent mic or extra batteries which youll definitely need in Japan. Just make sure to double check you get the AF version and not the old manual one tho.

Dude, congrats on the ZV-E10 II! I went through this exact same crisis before my Kyoto trip last year and honestly, I am obsessed with the Sony E 11mm F1.8 APS-C. I tried the Sigma zoom too, but for walking and talking? The Sony is just unbeatable. When you flip on that Active SteadyShot, you lose so much of your frame, so that 11mm focal length actually ends up looking more like a standard 16mm or 17mm. It is perfect for seeing your face AND the scenery without looking like a giant thumb!

  • The f1.8 is a literal lifesaver for those neon-lit Tokyo streets at night. f2.8 can get kinda grainy.
  • It is so freaking light that your arm wont fall off after filming for hours.
  • The autofocus is snappy as hell which is huge when you are moving around. Trust me, the too wide thing is a total myth once you factor in that heavy crop. Just grab it and enjoy Japan, you are gonna have an amazing time!
