So I just picked up the Sony ZV-E10 II and honestly I have no idea where to start with lenses its all so confusing. I heard prime lenses make the background look all blurry and nice which is what I want for my vlogs but I'm on a super tight budget now after buying the camera. I've only got like $250-300 left for a lens. I'm traveling to Korea next month and really want to film myself walking around but I dont want a huge heavy setup.

  • cheap as possible
  • makes me look good
  • not too zoomed in so my face fits

Is there a specific one that's easy for a beginner? sorry if this is a stupid question i just dont want to waste money...

Building on the earlier suggestion, you should totally check out the newer third-party stuff because they are absolute bangers for the price! If you want that creamy background but need to fit yourself and the streets of Seoul in the shot, the Yongnuo YN11mm f/1.8 DA DSM WL is basically a cheat code. Its super wide and that f/1.8 aperture makes everything look so high-end... plus its right in your budget. Another amazing pick is the Viltrox AF 13mm f/1.4 STM. If you can find it on sale or used, it is a beast. It is a bit chunkier than a tiny pancake lens but the image quality is honestly insane for what you pay. I love using wider lenses like these because you dont have to stretch your arm out as far to get a good shot. Definitely stick to lenses with auto-focus like these two though, cause trying to manual focus while walking is a total nightmare lol. Youre gonna get some killer footage with either of these!

Basically, you need a wide focal length for what you want. Since the ZV-E10 II has a crop sensor, anything above 20mm is gonna be too tight for vlogging yourself at arm's length. You would basically just see your forehead and nothing else. I think these two are your best bets for that budget:

  • Samyang AF 12mm f/2.0 E
  • This one is super wide, which is perfect for travel vlogs. It means you can see your face and a lot of the scenery behind you in Korea. It is really lightweight and fits your $300 budget easily. The autofocus is pretty decent too.
  • Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Sony E
  • This lens is famous for a reason. The f/1.4 aperture gives you that really blurry background you mentioned. It is a bit heavier and larger though, so keep that in mind if you are walking around all day. It usually sits right at the top of your budget around $330, but you can find deals. The Samyang is probably easier for a beginner because it is so wide you dont have to worry about framing as much while you walk. Just make sure the lens you buy has AF in the name so it handles the focusing for you... manual focus while walking is a total mess. Let me know if you have more questions about setting it up.

If you want the smallest setup for walking around Korea, look at the Sony E 16mm f/2.8 Pancake Lens. It's super light and cheap.

  • 16mm is about 24mm equivalent, which is decent for handheld stuff.
  • It makes the camera way less bulky in crowds. Also check the Meike 12mm f/2.0 Wide Angle AF Lens Sony E if you want more background. Both fit your budget easily and wont feel heavy.

My buddy told me the exact same thing last week. Guess he was right lol.
