I am leaving for Tokyo in exactly twelve days and I am currently having a total gear crisis with my a6700 setup. I've been shooting Sony APS-C since the a6000 days so I know my way around the E-mount ecosystem but this new body is making me rethink my entire travel strategy. I usually carry the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 and while it is tiny and sharp as hell the reach is honestly killing me lately. I was out doing some practice shots at a local street fair last weekend and I kept wishing I had more than 50mm without having to stop and swap to my bulky 70-350mm every five minutes. It is just too much friction when you are trying to actually move through a crowd and keep up with people.

My bag is getting way too heavy for a carry-on only situation and I really need a one-lens solution that can handle everything from tight Shibuya alleys to distant architecture. I looked at the Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 because everyone raves about the constant aperture and the internal stabilization but man that thing is a total brick. It almost defeats the purpose of having a compact body like the a6700 if I'm basically carrying a full-frame sized lens. Then there is the Sony 18-135mm which has the perfect range but I am worried the variable aperture is gonna bite me once the sun goes down or when I am inside temples where lighting is hit or miss.

Budget is around 900 bucks give or take but I need to pull the trigger tonight so it gets here in time to test the tracking before the flight. Is there something I am missing here? Maybe a lens I havent considered that hits that sweet spot of weight and versatility? I need to know if the 18-135 is actually good enough for someone used to prime-level sharpness or if I should just suck it up and carry the heavier Tamron for the f2.8. I've even thought about the 16-55mm G but it has no OSS and I'm not sure how much I can trust the 6700's IBIS for video while walking. What are you guys actually using as your primary workhorse for a three week international trip where you can only bring one zoom...

Tbh I think you might be overthinking the aperture issue with the newer sensor in the a6700. Since it is a BSI sensor, you can honestly push the ISO way higher than you could on your old a6000 without it looking like total mud. I would suggest looking at the Sony E 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 OSS again but with a real plan for the low light stuff. It is dirt cheap compared to your 900 dollar budget, usually around 600 bucks new or way less used, which leaves you a ton of cash for sushi and gear in Akihabara. Be careful with the Sony E 16-55mm f2.8 G for video. I know the a6700 has IBIS, but for walking shots at the long end, you still get those annoying micro-jitters that lens-based OSS usually smooths out. If you really need the reach but want to save some cash, maybe consider the Tamron 18-300mm f3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD. It is a bit of a chunk, but it replaces two lenses easily and the VXD motor is actually pretty snappy for tracking. Just make sure to test the focus tonight if you buy it, as superzooms can sometimes hunt in busy crowds like Shibuya. TL;DR: Grab the Sony E 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 OSS. It is the best budget-to-weight ratio and the a6700 ISO performance makes f5.6 way less of a disaster in temples than it used to be.

Quick reply while I have a sec since you need to buy tonight. Honestly, if you want the veteran take, just grab the Sony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS and dont look back. I know that variable aperture looks scary, but for a Tokyo trip, having that range without the weight is a total lifesaver. Plus, it leaves a massive chunk of your 900 dollar budget for actually enjoying Japan. Here is why it makes sense:

  • Grab a used copy for like 400 bucks and spend the leftover cash on a better hotel
  • It is light enough that you wont get shoulder fatigue by day three
  • The sharpness is totally fine for everything but heavy pixel-peeping I have seen amazing street shots from that glass. Just bump the ISO a bit when you hit those darker alleys and you will be fine. Tokyo is incredible, enjoy the ramen...

I would suggest Sony E 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 OSS over Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 Di III-A VC RXD.

  • Sony: Lighter/cheaper.
  • Tamron: Constant f2.8. Be careful indoors! I can help with settings if needed.
