What is the best zoom lens I should get for my new Sony a6700 for a vacation? Im so excited because I finally saved up for a real camera but I am a total newbie and honestly have no idea where to start with all these lens options. Im going to Italy next month and I really just want one do it all lens so I dont have to carry a bunch of gear around Rome. My budget is probably like $700 or $800 at most. I keep seeing people mention the 18-135mm or some Tamron one but what do those numbers actually do? I just want something that can take nice wide pictures of buildings but also zoom in on stuff further away without being too heavy. Is that even possible lol?
I have been using the Sony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS for about a year and I am very satisfied with it. To explain those numbers, the 18mm end is your wide angle for capturing large buildings in Rome, while the 135mm side gives you a decent zoom for distant statues. It is a very reliable choice because the autofocus is snappy and the stabilization works well. If you want more range, the Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD is an alternative, but it is heavier and might feel bulky on a small camera. For your first lens, the Sony 18-135mm is basically the safest bet. It is lightweight, fits your budget, and I havent had any technical issues with it. It is just a very solid, predictable lens for travel.
honestly i wish i could tell you there is a perfect lens for that price but there is always a trade off. I took a budget zoom to Florence once and unfortunately the autofocus just quit on me right in front of the Duomo. It was a total nightmare... had to shoot everything manually for the rest of the week. Most do it all lenses are just not as sharp as i expected anyway. If you want to save money, find a used Sony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS. It is okay but the build quality feels kinda cheap and plasticky. I also tested the Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD but it was way too heavy for walking around Rome all day. Just get the Sony 18-135mm used and save your cash for better food... even if the zoom range is a bit shorter than i'd prefer.
