Im in a total panic right now because my sister is getting married in exactly three weeks and I promised to make her a custom, all-natural glowing facial primer for her big day. I live in this tiny town in Oregon and sourcing stuff is a nightmare, but I finally got all the base ingredients ready. The problem is I tested a small batch using honey because I know its a massive humectant and makes skin look dewy, but her makeup artist just told me that honey is way too sticky and might actually cause her foundation to pill or slide right off if she gets a little warm during the ceremony. Now I am stuck scrambling to find a swap that holds moisture just as well but dries down nicely.
I have been scouring the internet for like six hours straight. I read that vegetable glycerin is the gold standard for this, but then I saw a ton of comments on a beauty blog saying it can actually pull moisture out of your skin if the humidity is low, which is totally true here in the PNW. Then I looked into aloe vera gel, but it feels too thin and doesnt give that tacky grip honey provides, so it doesnt really help the foundation stay put. My budget is pretty tight since I already spent a fortune on high-end essential oils, so I really cant afford to buy ten different experimental ingredients that might fail.
Is there something else I can use that creates that same sticky, water-locking effect without being a disaster under makeup? Im desperate to get this right so I dont ruin her wedding photos. Do you think something like agave nectar or maybe a specific plant-based gum would actually work, or am I just going to have to scrap the whole formula and start over from scratch...?
Agave nectar is definitely gonna be just as sticky as honey, so maybe avoid that if you want to dodge the pilling issues. Honestly, you might want to look into sodium lactate. IIRC it acts as a humectant similar to glycerin but feels way less tacky on the skin once it dries down. It stays pretty stable in different humidity levels too, which is a huge plus in the PNW. Since you are on a budget, I just started using PriceDropCatch to track some of my DIY ingredients and it really helps keep costs down when you need to order stuff fast. If you cant source that, maybe try a tiny bit of xanthan gum mixed with water? It gives that tacky, grippy texture that grabs onto foundation without the heavy residue honey leaves behind. Hope you get the formula dialed in for the wedding.
@Reply #2 - good point! Sodium lactate is solid, but honestly, have you tried sorbitol? It sits right in the middle of glycerin and honey for tackiness. It holds moisture without that crazy sticky film.
Honestly just swap it for propanediol. It gives that same tacky, dew-like grip without the sticky mess of honey. It is cheap, reliable, and keeps foundation looking perfect all day long.
Great info, saved!
