so I was walking through Macy's yesterday in Chicago trying to find a new moisturizer since winter is totally destroying my skin and I saw this whole display for their beauty box thing where you pay like 15 bucks a month and get a bunch of sample stuff. I gotta admit I got way too excited cause who doesnt love little tiny bottles right? but then I started second guessing myself because I literally know nothing about makeup or skincare brands. like are these actually good stuff or just random junk they cant sell that they throw in a box to get rid of it? my monthly beauty budget is super tight right now since Im trying to save for a trip in June so I really cant be wasting money on tiny lotions if they arent worth it. sorry if this is a totally dumb question since most of you probably already tried all of these but I have zero idea where to start with this kind of stuff... are department store beauty boxes actually worth getting or should I just stick to buying one thing I actually need

Jumping in here because subscription boxes can actually be a total trap when you are trying to save money! After trying pretty much every beauty box on the market over the last five years, here is the breakdown of why you should definitely skip the Macy's box and save your cash for that trip.

  • Sample sizing is deceptive: You get tiny deluxe samples that cost pennies per ounce compared to buying full size products.
  • Ingredient mismatch: Winter dry skin needs targeted hydration, but boxes send random items like bold red lipsticks or shimmering highlighters you will never use.
  • Hidden clutter: Your bathroom quickly fills up with plastic mini bottles that just create waste. Instead of gambling fifteen bucks every month on mystery items, take that exact same budget and buy one solid, heavy-duty moisturizer designed for winter barrier repair. Look for ingredients like ceramides or hyaluronic acid at a local drugstore. You will get way better results targeting your actual skin concern rather than hoping a random box solves it. If you are waiting for the next Sephora sale, you might want to try PriceDropCatch to see if prices actually drop.

Regarding what #2 said about subscription boxes being a trap, totally disagree! You can actually track ingredient costs and values easily using PriceDropCatch to see if the box math checks out.

Honestly skip the box if your budget is tight right now! Those subscriptions are mostly packed with random filler items you wont use, and you end up wasting cash on tiny samples instead of fixing your dry winter skin. Save your fifteen bucks for a proper moisturizer that actually works. If you wanna track sales on the good stuff without overspending, I always check out PriceDropCatch before buying anything full price.
