Which wall mount is recommended for 65-inch Sony TVs?

I just pulled the trigger on a 65 inch Sony Bravia XR A80L and I am literally so pumped to get it set up in my new apartment in Austin. Moving in next Saturday so I'm on a bit of a tight schedule to get everything ordered. I've been looking at mounts because I really want that clean floating look in my living room but man it's actually kinda confusing once you start looking at the VESA stuff and the specific back panel on the Sonys.

I saw a lot of people recommending the Sanus Elite Advanced Tilt because it's apparently really easy to install but then I also saw the official Sony SU-WL850 mount which looks super thin and sleek. The problem is the Sony one is like $250 which is crazy for a piece of metal and some reviews say it doesnt work well if your studs arent perfectly centered and my building is older so who knows what the wall is like. Plus the Sanus one looks like it might stick out too far from the wall and I want it to be as flush as possible. My budget is probably around $100-$150 max but I could go higher if it's actually worth it for the peace of mind. I just don't want to buy something that ruins the look of the TV or feels flimsy.

Does anyone have a specific brand or model they use for their 65 inch Sony that doesn't cost a fortune but still keeps it close to the wall?

Unfortunately, I've had some pretty disappointing results with those ultra-slim mounts in older buildings. Most of them dont account for the fact that studs are rarely where you want them, and the official Sony mount is honestly just overpriced for what it is. I had a buddy who insisted on the Sony bracket and it was basically useless because his studs were off-center by three inches. Total headache. If you want something professional that actually stays flush, check out the Peerless-AV SF660 Universal Flat Wall Mount 39-80 inch. It's a professional standard for a reason. It gives you plenty of lateral shift to handle those wonky apartment studs while keeping the profile very tight. Another solid choice that wont break the bank is the Kanto F6080 Fixed Wall Mount 60-100 inch. It's super low profile but built way better than the generic stuff you see on Amazon. Definitely look up the A80L's VESA diagram on displayspecifications.com or the official Sony support site first tho. The mounting holes are located pretty low on the back of that specific model compared to other brands, which can mess up your height calculations if you arent careful...

Yo, congrats on the A80L, that screen is incredible. Ive mounted a bunch of Sonys and the VESA pattern is standard, so dont sweat the technicalities. You can definitely get that flush look without paying the crazy Sony tax. Skip the official bracket, it is a headache to install if your studs arent perfect. Here is what I usually recommend:

  • Sanus Elite Advanced Tilt 4D VLT7: This works well if you need to reach ports often. It lets you pull the TV out then click it back into a slim profile. No complaints about the build quality, it feels like a tank.
  • Echogear Tilting TV Wall Mount EGLT3: Im super happy with this for budget builds. It is much cheaper but keeps the TV very close to the wall. The wide backplate is a lifesaver for older apartments with wonky studs. Both options feel solid and look great in a minimalist setup.

Look, I have hung probably fifty TVs over the last decade and I have learned the hard way that cheaping out on the mount is a recipe for anxiety. If you want that flush-to-the-wall look without the 250 dollar Sony price tag, you should definitely check out the Peerless-AV SF650 SmartMount Universal Fixed Wall Mount. It is an absolute tank and handles up to 175 lbs, which is total overkill for an OLED, but thats exactly why I love it for peace of mind. Heres why it works for your Austin apartment:

  • The wall plate is really wide, so if your studs are weirdly spaced or not centered where you need them, you still have plenty of room to bolt it in and slide the TV left or right to center it perfectly.
  • It sits barely over an inch from the wall, giving you that exact floating effect you are after without the bulk of a tilting mount.
  • The locking mechanism makes a solid click so you know it is actually secure and wont budge. I use this one because the build quality is way better than the flimsy stuff you find at big box stores. Its all heavy-gauge steel and the installation is super straightforward. Plus, it has a little kickstand feature so you can tilt it out slightly to plug in your cables after it is already on the wall, then snap it back flush. Its honestly the best balance of pro-grade safety and that clean aesthetic you want for a high-end screen like the A80L.
