Which Sony headphones are best for intensive gym workouts?

Hey everyone! I’ve been a loyal Sony user for years—I absolutely love their signature sound profile and their industry-leading noise canceling. Right now, I’m using the WH-1000XM5 over-ears for my daily commute and office work, but I’ve run into a major issue: they are definitely not built for the intensity of my current gym routine.

I’ve recently started a new training program that involves a lot of high-intensity interval training (HIIT), heavy lifting, and long sessions on the treadmill. Last week, I tried wearing my XM5s during a leg day, and it was honestly a bit of a disaster. Not only did the ear cups get incredibly hot and soaked in sweat, but they kept sliding off my head every time I leaned back for a bench press or did mountain climbers. I’m really worried that the moisture is eventually going to fry the internal electronics or ruin the ear pads, which would be a very expensive mistake.

I really want to stick with Sony because I’m already deep in the ecosystem and love using the 'Headphones Connect' app to tweak my EQ settings, but I’m torn on which model to pivot to for fitness. I’ve been looking at the WF-1000XM5 earbuds, but I’ve heard mixed reviews about the foam tips staying secure when you're moving fast or dripping with sweat. I also caught a glimpse of the LinkBuds S and the Sony Float Run, but I’m concerned that the open-ear designs won't have enough bass or noise cancellation to block out the loud, repetitive gym music that I can’t stand.

I need something with a solid IPX sweat-resistance rating that won't fall out during a sprint. Does Sony have a specific 'hidden gem' model that balances premium sound with a rock-solid fit for jumping around?

For those of you who hit the gym hard, which Sony headphones or earbuds have actually survived your toughest workouts without falling out or losing sound quality?

For your situation, I'd be CAREFUL with the Sony LinkBuds S because that IPX4 rating is kinda basic and might not survive heavy sweat. Tbh, check out the Sony NW-WS623 Waterproof Walkman instead... they're literally built for sports and wont budge during HIIT, though the sound is unfortunately not as good as expected compared to your XM5s.

Oh man, I totally feel u!! i tried leg day with my over-ears once and it was basically a swamp on my head lol. Since you're already in the Sony ecosystem, I highkey recommend switching to buds for those HIIT sessions.

Here's my take:
- Sony WF-1000XM5 Noise Canceling Earbuds: The sound is AMAZING and the NC blocks out that annoying gym music perfectly. But yeah, those foam tips can get a bit slippery when you're sweating bullets. I actually swapped mine for some silicone ones and they've been rock solid since (at least for me)!
- Sony LinkBuds S Noise Canceling Earbuds: These are lowkey the hidden gem. They’re sooo light and the fit is super secure for jumping around. plus, they actually DO have great noise canceling.

Honestly, either is a HUGE upgrade for the gym. maybe try the LinkBuds S first? Good luck!! 👍

Seconding the recommendation above! switching to buds is basically the only way to go for HIIT. tbh i’ve learned the hard way that over-ears just cant handle the moisture... but i have a couple questions first:

* what's ur actual budget for a gym-only pair?
* do you prioritize sound or a rock-solid fit?

knowing that helps cuz the top-tier gear gets pricey fast!

Been thinking about your dilemma for a few hours. Honestly, I've been super happy with how I narrowed down my gym setup by just hitting up the official Sony website. They have this comparison tool that lets you filter by activity and sweat resistance, which works well for finding the exact trade-offs between the XM line and their sportier stuff. I have no complaints with how their site breaks it all down. Theres also a really good deep-dive video on YouTube if you search for Sony earbuds HIIT test or something similar. I saw it a while back and the guy literally does mountain climbers to see which ones fly out. Its way better than reading specs. Checking the Sony sub on Reddit is a solid move too... people there are brutally honest about what survives a heavy leg day. Just search the archives there and you'll find everything you need.
