Ive been using my trusty WH-1000XM3s for literally years and theyve been great for my daily commute but I just booked this massive 14-hour flight from JFK to Tokyo next month and I started testing them for long periods and honestly my ears are starting to get that weird pressure/sweaty feeling after like 3 hours. I thought I was a pro with these things but maybe the pads are just shot or the tech has moved on way more than I realized lol.

Im looking to upgrade because I seriously cant deal with crying babies or engine drone for that long and my budget is around 400 bucks since I want something top tier. I was looking at the XM5s but I heard they dont fold as well which is kind of a pain for packing light in my carry-on and then there are the earbuds like the WF series but I dont know if the ANC is actually gonna hold up against a Boeing 777 engine for half a day straight. Does the newer noise canceling really make that much of a difference for the low-end hum on long hauls or should I just stick with what I know and maybe just get new ear pads? Basically what is the absolute best Sony model right now for someone who is gonna be stuck in a pressurized cabin for 14 hours straight?

Honestly, I have done that exact JFK to Tokyo flight a couple times and it is a total marathon... you definitely need the right gear. If you are worried about the XM5 not folding, the Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise Cancelling Over-Ear Headphones are the sweet spot in my experience. Ive tried many sets over the years and the XM4 still feels like the most reliable choice for travel because they actually collapse into a small footprint. The jump in noise canceling from your old XM3 is pretty significant too, especially with that low-end cabin hum. Earbuds are nice for short trips but after 14 hours your ear canals will be screaming lol. Stick to the over-ears for the long haul. Your ears will stay cooler if you just swap the pads for something breathable, but the tech in the 4s is worth the upgrade. TL;DR: Get the Sony WH-1000XM4 Noise Canceling Headphones because they fold better than the new ones and the ANC is a huge upgrade from the XM3.

To add to the point above: I've been doing these long hauls for years and honestly, the sweaty ear thing is the real killer on those 10+ hour legs. I used to rock the XM3s too, and while they are absolute legends, the noise canceling tech has definitely moved on with the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones. I know you are worried about the folding situation, but in my experience, they actually pack pretty flat. The case is a bit bigger, sure, but the ANC is a massive jump for that specific low-frequency engine drone you get on a 777. It is like night and day compared to the older models. If your budget is 400 bucks, these are the gold standard for a reason. But hey, if you want to save that cash for some high-end sushi in Tokyo, you could just fix the sweat issue for cheap. I switched my old pads out for Dekoni Audio Choice Suede Replacement Ear Pads for Sony WH1000XM3 and it totally changed the game. Suede breathes way better than that stock pleather stuff that Sony uses. It wont fix the noise canceling tech being a few years old, but it makes them way more wearable for a 14-hour marathon. Basically, if you want the absolute best quiet, go for the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones. If you want to be more practical, just upgrade the pads and see how it goes... you might be surprised how much life is left in those XM3s. Just make sure you charge them before you head to JFK!

To add to the point above: if youre struggling with heat and pressure, the Sony WF-1000XM5 Noise Canceling Earbuds are a great move. I switched for my last long haul and im really satisfied with how they handle engine drone.

  • No more sweaty ears or clamping
  • Super compact for packing
  • Usually way under your 400 budget The ANC is honestly impressive for buds and youll save some cash too.
